it's worth it

I find .mac to be worth it if you like simplicity.

i LOVE the fact that I can take new digital camera pics and literally, within about 3 minutes, transfer, edit, log into iphoto and post on my website to show my family, who all live at least 8 hours away.

the integration with the ilife apps is just way too cool and way too easy. i know pc folks who have switched for just this reason.

i personally haven't used the backup feature yet, but plan to in the future. i have a variety of external HDs which i use for that right now.

the only complaint i have is that the website can appear slow at times. i think they need new servers, but overall, still good value for the money.

cheers,
Keebler

Another small question.

Once I have my .mac account the url will looks somehting like 'web.mac.com/whatever name I choose' correct? If I went and bought one of those $1.99 domain names from godaddy or some similar service could I use my .mac to host and have it linked to a 'www.whatever name I choose.com'?

yes well sorta. the .mac server can't host your other domain but whoever is hosting it can forward your site to the .mac account. I have mine forwarded so I know it can be done!

Yeah, it would be your admin name, I believe. I also bought a domain name and then got a forwarding service (5 bucks, I think). So I tell people my catchy dot net name and they automatically get redirected to my difficult-to-remember .mac name.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of doing. If it isn't too pricey. Around $5 sounds right. Thanks

Depends on how experienced you are... I personally have all my important data in CVS, and all my mail on GMail. For $8/month you can get a full virtual linux host with root access, and way more storage.

But you'd have to do all the integration yourself, while .mac just simply works out of the box.

Who sells a $8/month virtual linux host with root?

You could sign up for the trial and see if you find it useful or not. I did, and then hardly used it so I didn't bother paying up.
