has anyone noticed that ultratonic 1 and gordonwebd have only made one post in macrumors and they are in this thread? i remember in the mac whiz thread, we preseumed it was the person who set up the site that kept appearing as different people and endorsed the site for their escellent service?

i dont know if these two people are in this category, but if gordonwebd suddenly comes back saying i have recieved my ibook, excellent service, maybe we should take their comments with a pinch of salt? maybe if they are this person behind the site, then they will not come and say it as i have said what they might have done and then come back as yet another new member saying how great it is?

just my thoughts. be careful with sites like this - if it looks too good to be true, it USUALLY is.

If what you say is true, just thinking about your situation makes my hair stand on end! Like others have said, there is NO way they could sell new Apple hardware at those prices, and there is nearly zero chance that they would have substantial stock of brand new PowerMac G4s.

Be ready for trouble. This could be an expensive mistake.

These guys are scammers! AVOID.

So apple will not allow "new" machines to be sold at a price lower than what they dictate to the reseller?
No, it's simple economics. A Mac that sells retail for $899 costs the dealer about $858. Plus shipping and all their other expenses. So if someone is selling the same Mac for $799, the Mac is either: 1) used, 2) stolen or 3) non-existent.

Gordonweb and others: THere have been a number of instances where shills have posted to the forum touting scam artists. Typically they say "I was initially worried about this vendor, so I called them, and I placed my order. There was a bit of delay in shipping, but the company was really good about it and I got my new [whatever] today. What a deal! I recommend everyone buy from this great company"

This serves to deflect suspicion about the company, plus add the expectation of shipping delays "because the deal is so popular". The longer the scammer can get people to wait before complaining to authorities, the more sales they can rack up before folding their tent and disappearing. That's why you will often see extended shipping times or excuses for late delivery.

Until you new posters gain some track record on MR, you will be looked at with suspicion as a possible shill -- that's unavoidable. Don't take it personally though, stay and become a trusted member of the community by posting thoughhtfully to a variety of threads.

I am NOT a schill.

from dictionary.com: schill

Zander \Zan"der\, n. [Cf. D. zand sand.] (Zo["o]l.) A European pike perch (Stizostedion lucioperca) allied to the wall-eye; -- called also sandari, sander, sannat, schill, and zant.

Jeez I hope not! :p

(Sorry, I got curious about the spelling of "shill" and then found that definition and couldn't stop laughing.)

</bad joke>

I second CanadaRAM's comment that you shouldn't take offense, and I too welcome you to macrumors (I guess I've been around long enough to say that).

As I mentioned before, I registered with macrumors when I was looking to buy a powerbook, so it makes sense to me that your first post would be on this topic. But it ALSO means that you'll be met with some suspicion on this topic due to others' shenanigans.

If you're looking to buy a mac in CT may I suggest the Apple stores in Danbury or Farmington? I wish there was a closer Apple store to me (VT), but we do have a kick butt Apple Specialist: Small Dog Electronics

Not only have I learned about the dangers of ordering on line but also the proper spelling of shill / schill!!! Great stuff! :D Anyway, yes those stores are about 45 minutes to an hour away depending what time I go. I just thought that it may be wise to check out 3rd party mail order sites since the apple store will charge the full price. I was not aware that there is only so low they can go. I may just get an apple refurbished model from the apple store online. I can't shut my current machine down since it does not like to start back up. I've done everything including replacement of the pram battery and......nothing. This is unacceptable!

ultratonic1...

Based on the few words I've heard about your problem, it might be a problem with the logic board. I'm not sure how old it is, and if it's worth fixing, but you might be able to take it into an Apple Store. I believe that they have a program where you pay a flat fee of around $300 or $400, including shipping there and back, parts, and labor. Just a thought.

Although mail order companies don't offer substantially lower prices, often they offer other incentives (e.g., extra ram, "free" printers, notebook cases, etc.). www.apple.com/buy has a list of authorized mail order and internet resellers.

as others have explained, i beleive my comments were justified as you have no history on this forum. if you are legitimate i appologise, however, if my comments have stopped one extra person giving money to the scam artist then i feel they have been well placed.

on one extra note, there is one extra thing that drew my attention to yourselves apart from just having the one post and that is looking at your user profile. the previous people who 'backed up' the other con schemes never filled any details in on their user profile, just like both of yourselves which really doesnt help to make yourself appear more legitimate.

Wow..You just happen to join when a thread about the site is made...HOW CONVENIENT. No one knows who the heck you are so I doubt you'll be missed, but just in case a mod should check your IP against any other IP's to see if you re-register or are posing as more people...

The phone number, (561) 282-0454 in West Palm Beach, is not registered in a reverse lookup (not unusual for a cell phone or private phone company number.)

That # is a NEXTEL COMMUNICATIONS Cell Phone out of W. Palm Beach. Now having a cell for a company phone isn't 100% suspet, but using it as the primary phone for your company is.

Another reason to stay away.

I just took a look at the macmacsales.com FAQ page and tried Googling for some text that appeared there: specifically, the exact sentence "You need to call Apple for technical support on the upgrades you purchased for your computer."

Check out the results, attached.

The exact text is found only on http://www.macshoppers.com/faq_info.htm http://www.*************.com/faq_info.htm (wow, that one's even censored here at MR!), http://www.macfanaticshop.com/faq_info.htm http://www.fastmacsales.com/faq_info.htm and http://www.macgurushop.com/faq_info.htm -- notice a pattern? :)

like others have said, both gordonwebd and ultratonic1 only joined after this thread was created... and their only posts so far have been in that thread, too.

verrry suspicious. do they take us for idiots or something? This is practically insulting.

I quote from the macmac site:
"We save on overheads. Large computer superstores pay massive
amounts in rents and staff"

ok, that sounds reasonable... but they also say:

"nothing beats speaking to an actual person when it comes to Sales & Service. That's why we urge you to call us when you're looking to buy a Mac. We strive to provide an informative, comfortable sales atmosphere"

I'm sorry, but SALES = OVERHEAD

Seems like they're contradicting themselves...
