Less Care

Thank you, and come again!

I am in total DISAGREEMENT with that. That is probabely the most ridiculous thing I have every read IMO.

ANYWAYS again I ask the same question does anyone have the actually sales numbers and not some "produced" chart that does not show any sold facts of actual sales?

If the Mac Mini was not doing well then it would have be canceled like the G4 Cube, etc. There have been Macs that have not done well but I agree with what alot of people are saying, you hardly ever see a Mac Mini in the refurbished section of Apples website because they sell so ridiculously fast.

-iGrant

PS if I can find the number of units sold I will post.

I dont think Apple wants you to see because its doing so badly. I totally think that the Mini is a waste (even though I own one) and I think Apple will discontinue it.

We are moving into a world where Laptops are much more popular (and some parts) cheaper than Desktops. Nobody wants a huge tower in their house anymore. The Mini WAS great when it came out, but now the cost of Laptop is much better than a Mini because you need to buy a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I would rather see Apple create another cheap laptop (MacBook priced at $800-900??) than update the Mini.

What exactly is the big interest in a new Mac Mini? I have one and it is a great little box. If you want more power, get an iMac. If you want to spank the iMac get a Mac Pro.

The fact that imacs and mac pros are available is neither here nor there. The mac mini was last updated a year ago, and apple declined to use the santa rosa chipset, despite the fact that it was available. So it was outdated the minute it was updated.

Now, a year later, it still uses a GMA 950 graphics processor, still can't take 4 GB RAM, and still maxes out at a 2 Ghz processor. Oh yeah - and it still costs the same, an utterly ridiculous $800 for that 2 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, and a 120 GB HD. Let's compare that to the $1100 macbook, which uses a faster penryn processor with the SR chipset, same RAM and HD, and - oh yeah - a display and keyboard because it's a freakin' laptop.

The point is that the mini's price is grossly out of line with its horribly outdated components - not what else is available from apple.

Another post that totally misses the point. Sales numbers? Who's talking about sales numbers? We're talking about Apple keeping its various product lines current/good values compared to both other apple products and other PC makers. Clearly, beyond any question, the mini is at the bottom of that list.

I have a particular interest here because I would be in the market for an updated mini, maybe 2 of them (one for the gf). I no longer need a laptop, so will be selling my macbook. But I have a great external mouse/KB/display/HD, but apple offers me no realistic option. The mac pro is far more powerful than I need and far more expensive than I want, and if I get the imac, a lot of my good peripherals go to waste. So I'd seriously consider the mini if it were even close to semi-current, but at this point it's just a joke.

Now that I will agree with, your logic is straight forward and I would agree. I would love to see a 6 ~ 9 inch screen iPod Touch. Now that would be nice, especially if all you are doind is surking the web, listening to music and watching video.

However there are still plenty of uses for an update to the Mac Minis. They make great servers such as ftp, file, and even web server depending on the volume of traffic.

I use my Mac Mini as my file and music server. I can be on any of my other macs and listen to my music without having to copy the data to each of them. I really like being able to do that with such easy.

The mini is not a primary desktop. It is a terminal to access a larger desktop or an adium machine. People do not choose between a mini and an imac or mac pro. People buy the mini in addition to the other computers. Some people even have minis to run their home entertainment.

This is "care". Not units sold, "care".

You're right... because Apple sure does care about the professional market. They update those Mac Pros so often, people wonder whether they're getting their money's worth. And those Cinema Displays? Not only are they not overpriced, they lead the industry in response time and contrast ratios.

Even if you use a MacBook like a Mini, you have to worry about upgrading in the future. I hope and think that Apple will release a xMac that is 1/2 the price of a Mac Pro. I just don't see how Apple will make money off a Low end tower. Most people want expandability and up-grade ability in a tower. And Apple is about selling a computer that Just Works! So doing that and making it expandable and up-gradable isn't going to be easy. Another reason i think the Mini may get killed off soon is the sure lack of press from apple about updates. It seems that they want to keep it as a entry level and that's it.

If Apple made a low-end tower...I would probably buy it. I would love something like a MacPro using the same specs as a MacBook. Something cheap but you can easily expand everything...however, this will never happen. Apple made it so if you want expandability, you must spend the cash for the Mac Pro.

Eh? Course it is. It's mostly aimed at PC users wanting to switch, who already own a keyboard and monitor.

No company would market a computer to people who already have a computer.

My guess (and we're all just guessing here) is that the mini is doing very well despite Apple. Resale prices, even on G4 minis, are ridiculously high. There are seldom any refurbs in stock at the Apple Store. Since the mini is Apple's only affordable headless computer, I'd bet it's selling well, and Apple hates it.

In our office, we just had an old G4 Power Mac die on us and the boss asked for suggestions what to do. I recommended a new Mac mini.

" ... I don't see the Mac Mini going away any time soon and I really do think that Apple is going to update the hardware in the Mac Mini. ..."

I know I don't plan on replacing our Mac-Minis with anything other than an upgraded Mac-Mini ... don't need anymore PCs or winders' blue screens (yes, it still happens ) ... don't need to stack more hardware on the floor (ala super Mac servers, et al) ... The only thing that would keep me from not buying more 'Minis would be of Apple dropped the FireWire ports =

" ... the boss asked for suggestions what to do. I recommended a new Mac mini. ..."

You may have noted the banner ads here about the Mac-Mini sale at Amazon. If Apple decides not to upgrade the 'Mini, then Amazon would probably raise prices back up and treat it like a collectors item ... same, same at eBay, etc. ... even used, older 'Minis are desirable, which should ell you all about the value of it.

I use a mini because I want a big (24") monitor. A MacBook would be wasted on me in clamshell mode.

I don't see Apple updating the mini for a while. The original G4 mini was never updated (besides a minor speed bumps) while G4 machines moved on. The intel mini still has the original motherboard - so nothing more than speed bumps.

Hopelessly out of date? The new MacBooks have 800MHZ FSB and the mini is 667. The GMA950 is fine for 2D work - guess you need a MacBook if you are gamer. Yeah, not top of line but still 83% as fast a MacBook.

How much are MacBook refurbs? I have bought a low end mini for $499 refurb and high end for $610 (eBay). Looks like about $400 more for a MacBook - that is more than my 24" monitor cost, a significant difference.

I use a mini because, well, it's mini. I can put it almost anywhere and hook it up to my LCD TV when I need to. There's nothing else like it, functional, small and unobtrusive.

i disagree ! i had a G5 2.5 tower for 2 years and had every intension on buying a new quad 3.0 intel Mac Pro until i tried a mini c2d 2.0

i am not a gamer and do little to no video editing so the G5 was really overkill for me. the mini has handled everything i have thrown at it and never missed a beat ! i would recommend a mini as a desktop replacement in a heartbeat.

reading through all the forums here the mini seems to have the least amount of problems and troubles of any mac made.

i did end up buying a Mac Pro too, but mainly because they are so cool and the wow factor.

I hope they update soon. We've got a high end PC in our house (about half the price of a mac pro, despite similar specification :D just a shame to put a crap OS on it, actually Vista 64 ultimate is just about doing it justice), I tend to use a laptop on a day to day basis for basic stuff and internet access. I have an ancient desktop that I would like to replace, and I would love to replace it with a mini as I really like Mac OS, I use it at work occasionally. I would love to see the mini get an update though - even a minor tweak and a reasonable dedicated graphics card - if it's in a laptop it could go in the mini. I'm no big gamer but I do quite a bit of Photoshop and Flash work. It would be nice to have a mid range desktop that could cope with that to stop me arguing with him indoors over the big boy :D I don't like using my laptop for that sort of work although it's more than capable.

I've never understood why there's no mid-range desktop in apple's offerings. Not everyone wants an all in one imac - I don't - I already have a beautiful display. If apple did a mid-range, they'd probably wipe the floor with M$.

All this talk about having different computers for different purposes at home is making me smile. It's not that long ago it was a major decision to buy a computer at home and even the most basic setup cost about 3 months wages, and it was rare to find anyone with a home PC. I think we have about 8 machines in various states plus about 4 laptops, 2 PDAs, a PSP and soon a PS 3. I've got more LAN connections in my house than my old office :D

I installed a Mac Mini (2 core duo) inside an older WinPC case and hooked it to a nice, fat Samsung monitor here in the office, just to dodge all the grief from the win / linux weenies' Q&A ...

=====

MacBook Pro now has the 2.4 / 2.5 / 2.6 (?) Giga Hz Intel, so an upgrade of the 'Mini should be a natural ... I will be buying two when announced.

How is the chance that there will be a new Mac Mini by Jan2009?

I really would like one for next semester, but the current Mini seems a little outdated - especially by then.

The current generation Mini (MB138LLA and the MB139LLA) can take 4GB. Ask me how I know....
