Hello Everyone,

I have a:

Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini 3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

and

I want to upgrade it's hard drive to a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - Bare Drive and add Mushkin Enhanced 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Dual Channel Kit Memory.

Questions:

Can the processor handle this upgrade? (If not)
Can I upgrade the processor?
Or should I just buy a new Mac Mini!

Thanks

I have that HD (WDC WD3200BEKT) and 8GB of G.Skill memory from Newegg, works great but I'll soon swap this out for one of the new iMacs (i5 2.8 Quad) once the refurbs are out.

You mention it works great. Did you have to change the permissions?

No, but I picked up that HD when I purchased the Mini, and did a clean 10.5 install direct to that HD. No issue when I upgraded to 8GB not to long ago, I'm not aware that could trigger a permissions issue(??)

Guily,
What do you mean by (I need copy and paste for this one…)? Can you explain? Thanks
And, by the way the memory is what Apple approves. (Hynix Semiconductor Inc.)Cheers
Hynix has 3 different kind of 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs, that's the point. The 9400M (MCP97) is very picky on RAM.

Your problem is RAM related. Get other RAM and you'll be fine. G.Skill's Apple Series works fine with the MCP79, so you can't do anything wrong with it.

And the copy and paste is general, as repairing the permissions it's the first thing you should do when you're encountering any kind of error.

I found out the problem. KomputerBay sent me the WRONG chips.

They sent 1 4GB (2x2GB) Hynix H5TQ2G83MFR-G7C 1066Mhz (7-7-7) and 1 4GB (2x2GB) Hynix H5TQ2G83MFR-H9C 1333Mhz (9-9-9).

I'm go to send them back for the right chip set (2) 4GB (2x4GB) Hynix H5TQ2G83MFR-G7C 10677Mhz (7-7-7).

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks to everyones help and suggestions.

I recently installed 2x4GB Kingston RAM for ~$140 shipped. My early 2009 Mini is my main computer that I use for web design and development. I couldn't be happier. Well, I take that back. I will be happy once SSDs drop down in price.
