Am looking to get 2 Minis for prepress situation. Heaviest work will be occasional PhotoShop; but mainly opening large PDfs, checking them. Also running RIP Clients to process jobs.
Was toying with the idea of getting Server, then backgrade to standard OSX, as we do not need server functions. Anyone aware of problems with re-purposing in this way? Hooking up an external optical drive I don't see as an obstacle.

I really wish one of the many Mini owners here would just run Xbench already...

come on people, it takes only a few minutes!

OK. I'll take the challenge.

1. I've got a late 2009 2.53 4GB-stock 320GB HDD. Will be upgrading to OWC 256 SSD + HDD 500GB Momentus XT plus 8GB RAM later this week.

A few weeks ago it xbenched at 122.91 overall
memory test 188.56
disk test 34.64

2. I've also got mid 2010 2.66GB 8GB-CTO 500GB HDD. Will also be upgrading this to OWC 512GB SDD + HDD Momentus XT around end of month.

A few weeks ago I also xbenched this at 61.70 overall
memory test 197.24
disk test 45.55

Go figure? Just wonder if not the older Mini 3,1 is not inherently faster than the new 4,1 Mini?

Take a look at the OWC benchmarks tests too. Of course saw these after I bought the 4,1, but wanted to use it with HDTV in family room.

Can't find my link right now but its OWC>tech support>benchmarks>Mini.

Any of you gurus understand why the 2010's overall is so bad compared to my 2009?

something's wrong with your mini or the xbench test is invalid. i get anywhere from 117-122 overall xbench score with the stock 2.4ghz 2gb ram mini4,1.

Ok so if I remember I had nothing running but it is connected via HDMI always to an HDTV. Is that the best way to run a xbench test?

don't think it matters. i had mine connect to both a monitor and an hdtv when i ran the tests.

I'll try it again and report back.

Ok-just ran xbench again.
122.02 overall
190.96 memory test
disk test 46.53-this is the really a disappointing one, but that's what you get from a 5200rpm drive

i only get around 41 for the disk test with stock 320gb drive, but it's not a big deal for me. if i wanted performance, i wouldn't have bought a mini.

You are correct. I just don't want anything larger than a Mini, right now. Its size is perfect for my use.

It's just that I get the beach ball so often on either Mini I want to eliminate that if at all possible and an SSD should help me there if I position enough data files on a second drive. On another thread a guy suggested moving the entire "Home" to the second drive so the SSD "reads" a lot, but "writes" very little. Great suggestion.

I tend to run at least 6 windows all day long plus 1-2 numbers windows either open or minimized. That surely is the kind of sand beach balls like!
