An ssd option and a good gpu would be nice. I am hoping for more t-bolt ports myself.

your right that would be handy at least a 120 ssd upgradable to 500gb so on

Here's a discussion point:

What if Apple made the Mac mini more like the MacBook Air. Now it doesn't have an optical drive, imagine a smaller machine with a faster CPU, but SSD storage and RAM soldered directly to the board.

It's very unlikely (given that Apple actually made the Mac mini's RAM easier to upgrade in 2010), but they do seem to be commoditising the Mac line, making them more iOS-like and exerting more control, so what if?...

personally if it were like that i would not buy it

macbook airs are for parents who don't know what there doing and people who can't afford a macbook pro. this is the specs of the current mac air's: (base model)

11-inch : 64GB
1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
processor
2GB memory
64GB flash storage1
Intel HD Graphics 3000

price:$1,099.00 (australia)

and thats quite a lot of money for those specs!

the cost of the mac mini with screen and 8gb ram I'm looking is :$1,093.00
specs

2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
8GB memory
500GB hard drive/might upgrade to ssd later
AMD Radeon HD 6630M
OS X Lion
screen is here:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5353783&CatId=4420

if it did have soldered ram that would be disappointing, as soon as i got the thing i would put the max ram in.

Yeah, user accessible RAM is absolutely necessary, considering Apples BTO prices. But I wouldn't have a problem with a MBA-like SSD. Okay, it's a bit slower than a "real" 2,5" SSD, but it's cheaper (for Apple) and saves space, so they may be able to build a bigger graphics card in it. Of course nothing like a AMD HD68xx/69xx or GeForce GT560, but something like a Radeon HD6770 in a special version could be possible.

"Low volume product"? Yeah, that may be true for Apple if you compare the Mini to the MacBooks or iMacs, but every other PC maker would dream of a single computer generating as much volume as the Mac Mini. And believe it or not, this makes nice money for Apple - so there's no reason not to update it regularly.
I have the feeling Jobs wished the mini had not sold so well so he could justify discontinuing it. It's way too upgradeable for Apple's MO, and you can plug in way too many cables. You can even reuse your own non-glare display!

People... Apple is always "against the flow" ivy bridge is launching this 23rd but that doesnt mean apple will throw a ivy bridge into their product ASAP..

that is why they are very successful. testing their product at least 6months before releasing into public.

we can see ivy bridge ASAP on windows machine absolutely!

They for sure won't wait 6 months until releasing Ivy Bridge Macs. They never did. After all, it's just a minor CPU upgrade, so some weeks intense testing should be enough. And don't forget they get the new CPUs some months before they're released to public for testing purposes.

Do you nay-sayers realize that Apple (and all the other manufacturers) get samples of the CPUs WAY in advance of production? Did you not notice a recent article showing a new HP laptop with the Ivy Bridge processors already in-hand and ready to review?

That's basically what I said. ;) Also don't see a reason why the next Mac Mini update should be after June. Or maybe at WWDC with some bigger improvements...

Unfortunately the mini is like the red-haired step child and only gets updated some time after the MBP, iMac and MBA.

That's how it used to be. It's well time for a change. :)

I would like the hard drive to be a "customer installable part". I'm considering a Mac Mini for my next Mac, but would like to get it with a standard HDD, then have the option to easily add an SSD later.

Ummm, last year the Mini and the MBA were updated on the same day. The only reason they weren't updated sooner was that there weren't processors for the the MBA and Mac Mini lines until much later (they don't use the same processors as the MBP and the iMac).

The processors for the mini have nothing to do with the processors that the MBA uses. The processors for the mini were available for a long time before it was refreshed. The mini server uses the exact same CPU as one of the early 2011 MBPs, which was released in March.

False.

Pah! Tell that to anyone who's ever owned the first generation of any product made by Apple, ever.
LOL... I hate to say it, but I completely agree with you.

First generation PowerMac G4 Aluminum: In for repairs on display, optical drive, speakers, and hard drive.

First generation MacBook Pro: In for repairs on display (x6!), optical drive.

I always get AppleCare.

Been discussed extensively elsewhere, e.g.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1263649/

there are also other threads if you do a quick search...

generally as an owner of a mini server having moved over from late 2007 15" MBP, I would say the only thing this machine needs is a dedicated GPU and then it's flying. If can fit one in and keep the heat down with the quad core processor also in situ

Current mini server uses Core i7 2630QM doesnt it, which has a TDP of 45W doesnt it?

I think it will end up using either the 3610QM, which is 2.3ghz TDP of 45W or the 3612QM, which is 2.1ghz but has a TDP of 35W?
Not that it matters as I think its nailed on Apple will go with Intels integrated graphics

... so what if?...

Dont imagine that it would go that way personally. I'd imagine that the Apple TV would expand to take that slot of a heavily locked down hockey puck unit.

I smell a loose, jealous thread

You are an insulting idiot. I have hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting in the bank, doing nothing. I could have any Mac product I want -- and I do; I have one of everything -- but I CHOSE to retire my Pro in favour of a MacBook Air because I'm a writer who needs something lightweight. Oh, and because I'm not stupid enough to think that an optical drive is a particularly useful tool in 2012 with all the wireless, bluetooth, and cloud capabilities going on. DVDs? Really? People still use those? I haven't touched a cord or a disc in six years, except to plug in a charger. I can't even remember the last time I used a DVD or a flash drive. Why? Because the Air revolutionized the way mobile people work in a substantially digital age. I can carry a MacBook Air and an iPad and do more with less weight on my shoulder than that of one bulky Pro. Just because it's not useful to you, does't mean it's not a blessing for somebody else. Realize that some people use their machines for more than just browsing and music and movies. Some of us are professionals. Yeah. That's right. I'm not some broke-ass student who has ONE machine to my name, using my solitary laptop to play my decades-old DVDs. I have an iMac for when I need to work at a desk... I have a Mini and several AppleTVs for my media centres... I have a MacBook Air for working on the go... and I have an iPad for reviewing and editing instead of maintaining piles and piles of paperwork. See, I can afford a tool for every purpose. Why would my Air need to be anything more or less than what it is? It suits a very specific purpose for me and I love it. It does everything my Pro did without the weight and the useless drives. I write successful scripts for TV and film, I copy files, I stream music and video, I edit music and video, I browse the internet, I buy and sell real estate... what exactly is it lacking when it's clearly helping me to be so successful?

I seem to recall a lot of people calling the iPad useless when it was first announced. Those same people went out and bought one months later. But if you want to start slinging mud... learn proper English before you insult people. It's "you're right" not "your right", as "you're" is a conjunction of "you" and "are"; "they're doing" not "there doing"; and "THESE are the specs of the current MacBook Airs" not "THIS is the specs of the current air's". Really. If you're speaking in plurals, it's not a possessive. The MacBook Air doesn't own anything. You sound like someone who can't afford the luxury of solid state and cloud storage, so you make fun of people who aren't confined to cords like your decades-old ghetto arse. Kinda like people who were anti-cell phone when cell phones first came out. Next time, try to be helpful without the derogatory commentary.

A macbook air is garbage if you are not a mobile user.

If you are a mobile user it is very useful piece of gear.

Since you are a mobile user that has lite (sic) cpu needs the macbook air is good for you. For a person like myself it is garbage. I am not a mobile user. I use higher powered cpu programs and graphics are very important to me. Along with quality sound and fast storage options.
I get that you felt insulted by the poster.

Right now mac rumors has a lot of frustrated computer users since almost all gear is 9 months old. Ios is the exception in this case. The new iPad is pretty new.

Most of us are tired of waiting for new gear.

BTW I was down on the ipad and I still don't have one. I can see lots of uses for it now that it is been out for a while

You are an insulting idiot. I have hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting in the bank, doing nothing... WALL OF TEXT

Good that you pointed that out, could you please also provide us with a bank statement in order for us to verify that statement? Since its so ****** relevant?

And i agree, macbook airs are perfect for frustrated, struggling writers on the road over-dosing on caffeine at Starbucks correcting peoples grammar at geek forums.

PS,

Maybe you should cut down on the coffee? ;)

Careful now, keep only $250k or less in one bank as that is the limit insured by the FDIC. You never know when another bank could go belly up and that would be the end.

Okay predictions just by looking at things if they go a similar route as in 2011.

Base model:

Processor: i5-3320M (i5-3210M is a bit low)
RAM: 4 GB at 1600 MHz (option for 8 GB)
Graphics: Intel HD 4000
Storage: Probably 500 GB at 5,400 rpm (with hopefully both an option for the 750 GB at 7,200 rpm and 128 GB SSD)

Mid-range model (if there is one):

Processor: i5-3360M (option for i7-3520M)
RAM: 4 GB (option for 8 GB)
Discrete graphics: ?
Storage: Same as above except an option for a 256 GB SSD or maybe even a 512 GB SSD. (they have to rope you in by getting you to pay more for their upgrade though at least offer a 128 GB SSD to the low end customers)

Server:

Processor: Possibly i7-3820QM

Everything else same as above minus discrete graphics. Perhaps on the mid range model, they offer the i7-3612QM since it's 35W. Now even though Apple only offers an 8 GB option, you can still add 16 GB on the dual cores and 32 GB on the quad core/s, however it's doubtable we'll be seeing DDR3 SO-DIMMS at 16 GB.
