First, I am not sure whether or not 15'' rMBP supports MAX TDP 45W or 47W or more...possibly it supports enough Watts to host Iris Pro 5200.

Second, APPLE might delay new Mac Mini update because they try to redesign the external case / re-arrange internally the components to host Iris Pro 5200 graphics + quad-core i7 along with TB2 (and USB3.1?). That means we have to wait till Apr-May 2014 to see a fresh Mac Mini. I don't support this approach but I think it is likely to happen...

I think you're right,i only hope that the redesign doesn't take within the soldered ram.
Am i the only one thinking that the circular hole of the mini to reach the hardware could have inspired the Tube Mac Pro?

I am looking at purchasing a mac mini to replace my windows xp system. So the Mac Mini on apples website now is a 2012 or 2013 model?

Right now I can buy this:
Mac Mini
2.3GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB Fusion Drive
Apple Care and SuperDrive
Total: $1527.00

So this is not the latest stuff?
Should I wait before ordering?

The mac mini's you can buy from apple are 2012 models that have been out for over a year. If it is not urgent you could wait until they are refreshed, although no one is sure when that is going to be. Could be tomorrow, could be a month or more. Also, I'd recommend ordering the stock 4GB of ram and then buying and installing 16GB RAM yourself. http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-CT2C8...&qid=1383453132&sr=8-2&keywords=16gb+mac++ram It is super easy to install and you can save yourself $160. If you are willing to disassemble the mini you can save some money with a DIY fusion drive as well.

Excellent, thanks for the link. I didn't know you could install the ram yourself. I did that with my XP system years ago from 2 to 4 but my XP is over 6 yrs old I'm maxed out of ram so now is the perfect time to switch to a mac that I've been wanting to do.

I'm not in a huge rush since my XP still works, so maybe I should wait, my only fear is if they change design of mini so I can't change ram??

Worst case scenario waiting is you see what the new offering is, and if you like the old one better you can pick up a refurbished 2012 from the Apple Store.

this machine cost me under 1600 usd to build.

you really do not want apple to put together a far lessor machine for 1537.

Maybe, but I thought maybe it came to someone while howling at a 'full moon'.

after having a smell with Scent of Allumi.Moon by Kelvin Plain:cool:

i really hope they're not soldering the ram in the Mini to thin it more,
having more allumina to smell...,
or my wallet will be..sealed
but i'm starting to think they won't update in order to sell more Mac Pro,
i mean a mini plus thunderbolt 2 plus m-logicX costs less (even with thundebolt bottleneck)..
but i'll have my Ps4 for gaming so..

I've been using mac since 8 years, Mac minis, MacBook Airs & MacBook Pros.
I needed a solid desktop, aiming for the quad i7 Mac mini but since apple hasn't released an updated Mac mini and the new version will probably be non-upgradable for the user I build myself a hackintosh.

i7 4770K
8gb 2133Mhz ram
2 x 120gb SSD
1Tb HDD for storage

I already have a premium dell 27" display and build myself a hack performing like an iMac, instead of waiting for a new mini.

But I will continue to buy MacBooks!

What do you mean when you write "the new version will probably be non-upgradeable for the user"? Thanks.

I fear that Apple's anti-consumer push may end up forcing me down this route as well. A nice portable Mac, but no longer a desktop replacement, as Apple pushes for thinness over function, and maximum margins over customer needs/desires.

It really all depends on what they do with the mini refresh and dGPU, IMHO. If it's a 4600 or 5000, then there is little hope that Broadwell will bring satisfactory iGPU to the mini, and I'll go hack/MBAir. If it's a 5100 or 5200, AND the ability to still upgrade RAM/HDD/SSD, then my future will probably be mini and less functional portable.

Which is sad, because I rather enjoyed getting a slightly less powerful 15" MBP, which had all the capabilities of the dGPU, and using that as a desktop replacement. But Apple is simply pricing me out of that experience anymore.

...no problem! who cares? ...I will buy a nice 21.5'' iMac instead.... ;)

I care. I have kept with my 24" iMac because an iMac effectively means the cost of a screen every update. If I don't have to factor in the cost of a screen each time, I can afford to update more often.

anti-consumer push? this statement is all over this thread and it's simply ridiculous. the normal, average consumer couldn't care less update user-upgradable RAM and stuff like that. they want a low-priced alternative to the 1300$ imac. get over it and have "fun" with your crappy hackintosh. you won't be missed.

Internally, an iMac isn't a monitor with a Mac Mini!

Technologically speaking, apart from the 1080p 21.5'' LG monitor (which must be replaced by a SAMSUNG -better- one....sooner or later!), iMac includes faster i5/i7 processors, better dGPU graphics and higher RAM capability.

It's another machine for different use.

However, in the beginning my idea was: "I've got a nice 24'' monitor and if an updated Mac Mini appears in Oct.-Nov.2013 timeframe, it may be a "good" candidate for my needs"...but since now, there isn't any update (not even official type of rumors...only our rumors!) and who knows when APPLE is going to update the existing one (possibly in spring 2014), my decision is almost made: "buy a full BTO 21.5'' iMac".

Of course, the cost is much higher! I know but an iMac isn't a kid-game machine and a full BTO version might be a future-proofed unit.

iMac is a "tool" for professional users (and wealthy home users...).

Anyway, I will wait till the end of Nov. 2013 before I make my final decision....

Thanks mr apple. The average user may not, but in my family alone, I have switched my parents to an iMac(I upgraded the ram and HDD), my in-laws to a mini(upgraded RAM and HDD), and my sister to a 13" cMBP just recently(upgraded Ram). I convinced them all to switch over, and have supported them all. I can no longer, in good conscience, advice them to stay with the Mac, because they are no longer user serviceable/upgradable. They are now stuck in time. They already gripe about the cost, and now they will have to spend hundred more up front, to make the machine last 3+ years down the line. Sorry, no sale to these "average consumers".

But keep on preaching the anti-consumer path apple is taking.

What "average consumer" is out there upgrading individual components when things start to go south on an old computer? Just about everyone I know would just buy an entire new computer when you get to the point where hardware starts failing. We're generally talking years into ownership when things start failing.

There is a difference in performance. But a 2 year old Mac Mini has more performance than a 6 year old iMac. I have gone 6 years without an upgrade to my iMac, but would have upgraded a Mac Mini a couple of times already.

The depreciation on a Mac Mini is so low, and the relative ease of sale, means that regular replacements is cheaper and less hassle.

And I use it as a "tool" for my business.

Excuse me! I am surprised!!!

Do you really need all these APPLE products in your family? are you home users? regardless your annual income, these products are considered very expensive and I think they are "tools" in your work and not "little toys" for big/small kids...correct me if I am wrong!

The mini is still upgradable and there isn't a shred of evidence out of Apple suggesting the next revision won't be, too.

That means I can't upgrade ram and storage, I've to buy OOB through apple.
In Sweden apple charge 450$ for 16GB ram and 270$ for 256GB SSD, go figure.
