So since there was no silent update for a Mac mini today , does that mean a different looking Mac mini coming with the new Mac Pro

I would not read that into this. Mac Mini updates would normally come after or alongside both MBP and iMac updates. The Mac Mini uses similar hardware to some MBP models. Would they really want to update the Mini before the MBP?

I am really hoping that DYI SSD and memory upgrades will still be possibility on the new mac mini's when they get released. I am hoping to get the base model and do these upgrades myself at the later time.

... and not at Apple's premium price tag

This is, of course, very reasonable. And I suspect it for quite a while now. It would make a lot of sense updating the Mac mini with a smaller form factor. A cube would be awesome, but I doubt Apple will listen to me. :) Over the years the Mac mini has matured from a stand-alone home computer to a small workstation and server. An announcement of the smallest Mac alongside the biggest Mac would make sense. Let's just hope it's out of aluminium and not plastic.

Did you forget the allmighty words already? The new iPhone 5C just came out and it is "no cheap phone because Apple does not do cheap products". :) Nowadays Apple sells more Mac minis than iMacs...

Since most activity happens in memory disks are not as active as one may think, especially when using a laptop or an UPS and then adjust the power settings.

This may be true for a desktop system, but can be totally different for a server, where dozens of users are logged in or using Apache or whatever. This is the reason why I have asked. :)

The older Toshiba's used less power when active but the new Q-series are good enough for me.

You have to differentiate between idle and write/read. Most manufactures use the avarage between the two. I just picked the stats from his latest review:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7337/corsair-force-ls-240gb-review/8

Did you know that a lot of Toshiba drives failed after just one year in the MBA 2012? Maybe other manufactures are a bit more reliable at the moment.

With the price rise recently (Australian online store) an update is probably not imminent.

The LAST thing apple wants to do at the Mac Pro release is to also offer an updated, MUCH CHEAPER, alternative. Expect a mini update at least a month, likely more, after the new Mac Pro release.

Why would they delay a release? If they really wanted to protect the Mac Pro they would replace the Mini with a Nano and restrict that to dual core cpus so the existing quad core model comes off the market. As it stands, a quad core mini, perhaps with Haswell Iris Pro 5200, could be attractive if it sells for under half the price of an entry level Mac Pro but with 75% of the performance.

Easy, you maximize the sales of the Mac Pro to folks who have been looking to upgrade for a while, but are faced with a brand spanking new Mac Pro, or the same old mini.

Sure, the two machines are in different categories. But with all Macs languishing this long, any possible upgrade path becomes a viable option.

PCI-e looks to be a good candidate for the 2014 Mini, regardless of the form factor the case uses.

Regarding form factor, I would expect the Mini case to either
- stay as it is now, with perhaps 2 Thunderbolt ports (in lieu of a single Thunderbolt port and a firewire port), or...
- perhaps emerge as a "bare bones" version of the new Mac Pro. It might utilize the same case components, but have a limited motherboard inside. Apple could even offer an "upgrade" from the Mini to the Pro (which would probably cost the user as much or more than if he had bought the Pro outright).

why do you think Mac Mini will be updated in 2014? Personally, I bet this is going to happen in late Oct. 2013 (without 2 X TB2) ... with Ethernet port, wi-fi ac and PCI-e SSD. Graphics? I don't know....probably, Iris Pro 5200 with the i7 Haswell processor.

There is some logic to waiting till 2014 mainly as other offerings to have the chance to make more $$$ i would say if we dont see un update after mid nov then it would probably be 2014. that being said however it could easily be a late oct silent update.

The problem with all of these speculations is that there valid/reasonable/logical/believable arguments for either of the variety of options suggested.

As long as you are happy with playing this guess/wait and see game then its all in good fun :D but i would not by any stretch of the imagination relay on any of these for serious decision-making as to purchasing.... If you desperately need one (business server crashed and there is nothing to replace it for a relatively short term) by one, if not wait for as long as you can :D

Well Apple just increased the price of the Mac Mini and they don't normally do that just before refreshing it. So I reckon 2014 is looking a lot more likely than it did before the price rise. I hope it is updated next month though as I might buy one if that happens.

The average loaded Mini would be half the price of the expected new Mac Pro. I don't think they fly in the same budgetary circles.

Apple are only using a single i5 quad with Iris Pro 5200 so we can now discount the (far fetched) idea of them using a range of desktop chips in an all new Mini design.

My opinion at the moment is to wait and see what happens to the Macbook Pro updates. It's becoming increasingly certain that PCIe flash will be at least an option in the new Mini. This suggests a redesign of the case and internals to allow for PCIe flash plus a normal 2.5" drive bay so a Fusion drive could be specified.

The iMac range hasn't really changed much in spec and price has only drifted up a little bit overseas due probably to exchange rates.

I'm expecting an unchanged entry price for the Mac Pros when they come, they certainly won't be any cheaper and might well be more expensive due to the PCIe flash as standard.

If Apple want to avoid distractions from a high bang-for-buck quad Mini they could simply drop quad processors from the redesign and concentrate on making a smaller case for 28W CPUs without having to cater for 47W Haswell quad cores. In this case they would market the new Mini as quieter, and with better graphics than ever before (if they use Iris 5100 dual core chips as expected).

It would simplify the range down to the following:

Mobile CPU (dual core)
Macbook Air

Dual Core CPU
Macbook Pro 13" (Retina), Mac Mini

Quad Core CPU
Macbook Pro 15" (Retina), iMac

Hex Core CPU (or more)
Mac Pro

If the Mac Pro is quite expensive due to the flash there's a case for allowing the next Mac Mini to continue with a quad core model but as mentioned elsewhere I think we're all waiting for case leaks or other news before commenting further.

Totally agree. Besides that, on the average update interval the new Mini would be released in February/March, so that is some months ahead. If they manage to release the new pro early december, it would give Apple a nice margin of 2 months before the little pain-in-the-ass-of-the-pro comes out.

I will buy... but it depends on its specs and price...

Mac Mini 2012 Fusion and SSD Price DROP?

Did the price of the 2012 Fusion and SSD in the Mac Mini drop?

I think before it was $250 for the fusion and $300 for the ssd.
Now, both the fusion and ssd in the $799 model is $200.

Also these are the same prices as upgrading to fusion and ssd in the new 2013 imac!!

yeah they dropped.

Could be a clearance effort. With the iMac the latest to get the PCIe SSD blades and updates to the Macbook Pro range inevitable the Mini could be the only machine left taking the old Samsung 830Pro based SATA3 disks until they decide to update it.

yeah they dropped.

Prices for upgrading to Fusion or SSD only are now the same here in New Zealand too.

As much as everyone is waiting for the newest Mac mini it may actually not be a good thing if Apple goes to proprietary connectors, PCIe or soldered in - it may become difficult, impossible or not worthwhile to upgrade the memory or drive ourselves.

If that happens the older models may become sought after, especially if someone wants one or two large SSD's fitted.

yeah my 1.96gb diy fusion with 1tb crucial ssd and 1 tb hgst in the 2012 quad my be in more demand. I did very well when snow leopard was phased out. if the new mini is pcie only and if maverick os is stock no mountain lion.
I could see my 2012 quad increase in value .

As of today....Mac Pro update will be announced in Oct.22 ...

Mac Mini and MacBook Pro will wait till the end of Oct. 2013 for a silent update (my opinion).

Unfortunately, there isn't any i7 mobile Haswell processor (Dual or Quad Core) + Iris Pro 5200 graphics combination below MAX TDP 45W Mac Mini case limit.

Most possible combination is dual-core i7 mobile Haswell processor with Iris HD5100 or HD5000 graphics.

Staying below the MAX TDP 45W case limit, the only quad-core i7 mobile Haswell processors combined with HD4600 graphics...
