Now that's the bad news. Apple made it extremely tough to change the hard drive in these new models (but it's doable) but be prepared to take everything apart. If you have no experience, get someone that has experience to do it for you.

Or use a USB/TB external enclosure and boot from that. No need to rip apart your mini.

Wait Im confused. Harder that before??

Maybe different parts but easier than before. All you have to do to put in a SSD is take the back off, unscrew the metal plate (get over the "special" screw, the driver for it is readlly available) Attach the PCI cable to the MB, Connect the blade SSD, Attach the PCI cable to the HD housing, close it up.

No need to remove the MB/PSU and all that as before. If you want to place a 2.5 SSD in the HD caddy it is pretty much the same as before.

Man .... people FREAK OUT over a $2 screw driver.

Not everyone wants to pay extra for Apple PCIe SSDs.

The discussion wasn't about price but the mechanics to do the change.

The new models are no harder than the previous models and in some cases easier.

As far as price goes, like all things SSD they are coming down. OWC announced at CES that they where introducing blade SSDs for the 2013 Airs which means they will fit the 2014 Mini.

Where have you been for the past year? For this model, you literally have to take everything apart to get to the HD. EVERYTHING.

And I'm not talking about the PCIe, I'm talking about the SATA connection.

OP Sorry about this short detour.

OK Im willing to learn. What is different with this model from the previous ones? Please do not include the "security" screws.

Watch this whole video (5 minutes) and see how you take everything apart to get to the SATA HD.

Bro. The question here is to find out what is different from previous Minis vs the current ones. Not how to do a current one.

When I did my 2011 Mini SSD upgrade I had to take "EVERYTHING" out to get to the 2.5 bay/SATA connection.

So the question remains... What is different and makes the 2014 model more difficult than the previous models? Please do not include the "security" screws.

Well for the 2012 Mac mini you don't have to take everything apart to get to the SATA connection. 2012 is more user friendly against 2014.

IC Thanks

Back to your regularly scheduled programing.

Again, Sorry OP for the detour.

This was my experience. Despite my post above promoting the use of an external enclosure, I also installed an SSD on my 2012.

That chore was pretty simple; especially, if you don't blindly follow the YouTube videos that show complete dis-assembly at the speed of a Marine Recruit with his M-16.

I removed the rubber bottom (*that thing was stuck on*), the fan, the WiFi antennae plate and that was it. I'm now sure I could have done this chore with the fan also hanging (perhaps secured with Scotch tape to the case) and not disconnected anything.

With the 2014 mini and the drive in the upper bay, it looks like you have to go down to the metal to get the hard drive out.
