Please do share! Could you possibly put them up in MP4 format playable by Quicktime? It seems to have the best performance.

There's a bunch of 4K/2160p movies of the Sun up there and I will put a bunch more up.
Enjoy!

You can message me if you like, and I can point you to the originals/source movies I make (from which the YouTube videos are made) are H.264 encoded MPEG-4 .mp4 files.

I believe thunderbolt 2 can display up to 4k resolution. I don't think thunderbolt 1 can do it. My Mac mini is connected to a hdtv and I used Newertech Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter and it goes up to 1920x1080. It probably can do 2160p if used DisplayPort directly to a special display.

Fool

The connector is a Type A HDMI connector, which is a version of single-link DVI but with audio. This connector is only capable of 1920x1200. The Type B HDMI connector is wider (more pins) and can get you 3840×2400, which is not quite 4k.
The fact that you don't know that 4K resolution is 3840x2160 has made you lose all credibility.

You don't need a haswell mini (though it'd give better graphics performance). Theoretically the HDMI port on the current mini is supposed to be high-speed, but driver-issues seem to prevent 4k resolution except at low frequency rates.

Easiest way to do this is with an Accell B086B-008B-2 adapter plugged into your thunderbolt port. That will give you 3840x2160x30Hz. With my Seiki 4k, it works out of the box on my 2011 mac mini. Some other users have found they needed to use switchresx to make up a mode for their TV's - not sure anybody has tried a sony set yet.
I've been trying all day on my late 2012 Mac Mini using the hdmi port along with the clock patch & switchrezx 2 no avail... I just bought the Accell B086B-008B-2 adapter. I'm hoping it will drive my 50 Seike! Will find out soon!!

Would love to talk live with U!

I found the Accell B086B-007B UltraAV to be faulty. it kept flashing the screen signal on and off when in sleep. the included mini displayport to displayport adaptor doesn't do this. I've now ordered the 008B to test.

I also used to have success getting switchres x to play 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz on my Samsung U32D970Q display, but now it glitches.

The Samsung and Mac Mini also do weird things, when it goes to sleep it wont wake sometimes. One bad part about the samsung u32d970q is that turning off the display also turns off all the power to the usb devices - terrible design.

I can confirm that the 800 MiB/s of Thunderbolt 1 can display 4K resolution. I can even play 4K videos via eGPU with my Mac Mini 2012. Overall it's not as smooth as with an internal dedicated GPU in a Mac Pro, but smooth enough, and hey I have 4K @ 60Hz!

But I would recommend at a minimum a GTX 680 as eGPU. Scrolling in Safari or playing 4K footage requires 50% of the GPU capacity:

Hi all. I'm ready to set up a new HTPC. I want to buy a mac mini and set it up on my Sony 4k tv. To get the cpu to run at 4k, what type of cords/adapters will I need? Will a high speed HDMI cable work? What other settings might I need to adjust to try to get the TV to operate at 4k and about 25 - 29 hrz?
I wouldn't rush the purchase, October is traditionally the month Apple releases new Macs...

Wouldn't you want your Mac Mini to be able to run at 60hz and natively decode HEVC?

Which eGPU are you using? I have TB2 via late 2014 mini.

Sorry for a newbie question, I have the late 12014 Mac mini and recently purchased the new Sony OLED tv, wondering if i connect via HDMI directly to the tv, will i achieve 4K results or do i need the adapter for thunderbolt? Thanks in advance.

Nothing you do will make it 4K@60p 4:4:4

Sadly, Mac Mini has been abandoned by Apple...

Is there a significant difference between using HDMI port vs. Thunderbolt w/ adapter to HDMI or are both pretty much the same?

I was able to set my output via HDMI 3840x2160, however everything on my desktop of course looks micro sized compared to 1080p. When playing back videos via VLC or Kodi, is there a difference between setting it at 3840x2160 vs. 1080p?

I might as well buy a tower then

But that would mean Hackintosh.

I've often pondered an eGPU to (indefinitely?) extend the useful life of my Late 2014 mini. My mini is the only one of my 4 Macs that doesn't support 4K @ 60Hz, and it bums me out, as I use it the most.

But an eGPU is a bit of overkill for me, plus rather inefficient as I run my mini 24/7.

I currently have a 2014 mini with a eGPU running AMD's 570 card and cannot get it to play 4k movies. I did the purge-wrangler script and it recognizes the card and I set plex and vlc to use external gpu and according to activity monitor they appear to be, but it still maxes the CPU and drops frames, about the same as without the eGPU. If I run a cinebench test I'm getting about 65 fps and testing with geekbench shows 10x the gpu performance, not sure what the issue is? Anyone experience this? during playback activity monitor appears as though it's using the GPU. I've tried just connecting with the thunder 2/3 to the mac and also taking hdmi from gpu to TV, no difference in 4k playback performance. Hard drive speed isn't the issue, tried using my SSD to confirm.
