I bought a G4 Mac Mini 18 month ago and at first it was really quiet, but it slowly became noisier and hotter. I use it to encode H264 MPEG videos so the CPU was running at 100% most of the time. Last week, the system froze and I had to turn it off using the on/off button. Unfortunately when it tried to boot, I got the dreaded "no hard drive found" icon. Since I had a spare 2.5" hard drive, I opened the Mac Mini (that wasn't easy !) and then I understood: the Mini was full of dust, so compact that I doubt much air could flow through it. I cleaned everything (and changed the hard drive since it was really dead), re-installed the system and now it is running fine and almost silently even though I have a video encoding running as I type this. Try looking at the ventilation openings under the Mini, and if you see some dust, it might be time to open it and clean it.

There is actually a little cable on the black drive "craddle" in the mini, that if not connected to the logic board, will result in the fan constantly running at full speed.

You really sure you didn't "temper" with it?

Hi, try resetting the SMC.
1. Shut down the mac.
2. Unplug all the cables includeing the power cabel. Wait at least a 15 seconds.
3. Put the power cord back in with your key board mouse and video cable.
4. Turn it back on and that should be you.

fan issues also

my mini has the same problem, i have not done any upgrades and the problem just started a couple of days ago, checked the activity monitor. nothing big is going on cant figure it out. it is on even after I shut down, it does turn off but only for a couple seconds and then back on high speed.
