Not at all. They are all instructed to reject claims if any grounds are given. You simply need to be prepared and willing to stand up for yourself.

Wrong. Even though they SHOULD be instructed the same, there are always exceptions. You can't say that all +30 000 employees do exactly the same and there is always the possibility that you actually damaged something while doing it. There are several tiny wires that can be damaged while doing it, even without acknowledging it.

So basically, you're saying go ahead and do it, it's impossible that that your warranty could be voided? A friend of mine has been fighting for a replacement MBP for several months and the bitchy lady who decides everything hasn't yet gave him one, even though logic board, case and LCD have been replaced four times now. All lower tier techs have been saying that you should get a replacement but the lady who decides the final action has always been against it. That's just one example how techs opinions can differ and thus you can't say you're 100% safe

i was watching the OWC video on youtube as i was doing the HD replacement, so I knew what I was supposed to be doing. There just didn't seem to be much room to slide the putty knife in so I had to angle it in on a few places.

i used a fat straight edge screwdriver when i did it. worked like a charm

You sure are. Try to do some research on the subject instead of guessing.

Then THAT damage won't be covered by warranty. You'll have to pay for repairs to those wires, but once its repaired your warranty remains unaffected.

So basically, you're saying go ahead and do it, it's impossible that that your warranty could be voided?
No. You clearly lack the capability to understand the discussion.

What did he break while trying to do an upgrade or repair himself? Nothing? Then your anecdote has zero relation to this discussion. Your friend, as stated above, needs to grow some and go above the "lady's" head to whomever is HER boss.

He has never opened it himself. I'm just telling you that not all techs behave the same because you obviously think that they do. She won't let him to talk to her boss, he has tried SEVERAL times to get to talk with someone else but EVERYTIME, she gets that bitch to decides the faith, so she's probably someone who is already a boss, not just a normal tech (this is in UK btw). I don't get what you mean by "growing", get a shotgun and find that bitch? If they won't do it, then they won't. No matter who you are and how you deal with it. You think it's so easy to get some big boss who will always do what the customer wants?

I know this is extremity but it means that no matter what Apple manuals and other pdfs say, the tech can be a bitch and make you suffer. If you call Apple 5 times and ask does upgrading RAM/HD void Mini's warranty, I'm sure at least one of them will say yes.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=13946

That says you can only upgrade parts that are considered as user-serviceable parts and as I've said, Mini has none. Take it or not but Apple makes it hard for us to get a clear yes or no answer

You should most definitely keep the old hdd that you take out.

Not only will they notice that the hdd is a much larger capacity that what came in the machine, if they do decide to repair you machine under warranty. It is entirely at their discretion to replace parts.

So if for example your machine will no longer work properly, and it's pretty obvious it's a ram issue and you take it back. They are well know to just take out you much larger hdd and replace it with the original size.

I've read that many a time. In fact i'm sure I read somewhere here that they have even taken ssd drives and replaced them with the standard hdd.

So in cases like these, ALWAYS keep the parts you take out if you want any chance of warranty and to not have you replacement parts go missing if you do get warranty.

as long as you didn't damage the internal components of the computer you should be fine....i have a mac mini, upgraded it myself, and decided that i didn't need applecare because desktops don't move around a lot so damage is highly unlikely. In the event of a hard drive failure...ill simply replace it myself

As stated before, your friend needs to grow a pair and go above her head himself.

I don't get what you mean by "growing"
Testicles, gonads, testes, mountain oysters, cojones, family jewels, balls, nuts, nads, nards, bollocks. Get the idea?

You think it's so easy to get some big boss who will always do what the customer wants?
Yes. Its a corporation, there is ALWAYS somebody above a person. Even Steve Jobs has to answer to somebody (the shareholders).

the tech can be a bitch and make you suffer.
Then get another tech. You know there is more than one person in your geographic location qualified to officially service Apple products, right? If he is too scared of her, go when she is not scheduled to be on the clock.

If you call Apple 5 times and ask does upgrading RAM/HD void Mini's warranty, I'm sure at least one of them will say yes.
Wrong. One poorly trained person does not make the rules for everyone else.

That says you can only upgrade parts that are considered as user-serviceable parts and as I've said, Mini has none.
That is false information. The above document contradicts the owners manual of the product and would not hold up in a court of law.

They are well know to just take out you much larger hdd and replace it with the original size.
Wrong. They cannot legally do such an act. It would be theft since there was no problem with the HD and they replaced it simply to take it away.
If you were to lose your hard drive it would be because they replaced the entire machine.

So in cases like these, ALWAYS keep the parts you take out if you want any chance of warranty and to not have you replacement parts go missing if you do get warranty.
Ah, so open the machine three times. Good idea.

keep in mind the applecare also covers all your
apple accessories like mouse, keyboard, time capsule,
airport express and base station etc.
