Boy, so the new Mac mini comes in space gray finish and has similar specs to that of the Mac Pro.

I’m now considering getting a used Mac Pro instead.

The new Mac Mini; the Mightiest and most versatile Mac ever? Sure. But this was a tepid update to say the least.

Other than the price as expected for anything Apple I think that it was a good update. Curious to here specifically what you felt was underwhelming.

Heck, when you compare them to the pricing/specs on the current Mac Pro, it is a steal.
But do we really have to talk about the Mac Pro pricing? I don't think the Apple tax is a problem, the question is why do they essentially release 8th gen CPUs when we already have 9th gen? Why didn't they make the case a little bigger to allow CPUs with 95W TDP such as the new 9900? Why is the Mini essentially a 15" MBP without the GPU?

I usually prefer my desktops to be more powerful than laptops. Not happening here and the config I'd like is $2.5k, not counting the needed eGPU. I'd rather put that towards the next Mac Pro. So the only way I'd buy one is if the price is right and I can upgrade RAM (seems so), SSD (unlikely) and CPU (someone mentioned it's socketed, but I don't expect it). The ultimate factor will be, is the i7 going to be somewhat silent or sound like a jet engine when under load. If it's silent I might consider the $1.5k version i7 with 512GB and add more external storage and up the RAM myself (but that's only because I have most components already anyway).

Umm. Are you new to this company called Apple? I have been buying Apple desktops going all the way back to the first iMac and this has always been the case. Even if you are looking at the old $499 mac mini, you could build the same/better computer for $100-$200 less.

I briefly went to a PC for a year, because I was upset at how quickly they made my $2000 G5 obsolete after the switch to intel, and it was the worst year of my life and am glad to pay the "magical apple tax" again.

But it has always been this way and these new Mac minis are completely in line with what you would pay with any previous systems they offered. Heck, when you compare them to the pricing/specs on the current Mac Pro, it is a steal.

I had Mac since 2008 and still own my 2013 rMBP (16gb). I'm familiar on all platforms (Mac,Linux,Windows) and can switch easily. I don't mind the mini, the form factor is great, just an insane markup. Non even talking about the fact that swapping the ram may void warranty because they say that it should be done by a profesionnal.

Take it with a grain of salt, looking at all the idio... ehm, "professionals" on youtube the definition of a professional is probably not what you think it is.

let's wait to see if Linus can do it without breaking the machine, then we know anyone can do it.

the top i7/8gb/256gb + external 2tb ssd is the ideal combo for the money. Wondering if they use a single sodimm or dual 4gb?

they didn't even use iris graphics. This mini is pointless without an eGPU
It depends on your use case, it you are not running GPU bound applications this is a fine update. For instance, software development will be fine with the I7 version.

On the other hand, if you want to play 4K video games at 60+ FFS then no, this is not the machine for you.

better price! You can get a ryzen 2700x + 32gb ram + 512gb ssd +gtx 1060 (+board+case and psu) for 1200$. Compared to an i7, 8gb,512ssd for 1500$

there is a some serious magical apple tax in this!

The machine & options are great but the price is not
Then you should buy the ryzen machine and quit complaining. The Mac mini also doesn't accelerate from 0 to 60 in under three seconds either.

Linus can't change the batteries in a remote control without breaking it. :D

Let iJustine try. I like her videos for what they are, she likes tech and is passionate about it, but is not a tech person deep down on a technical level. But honestly, give her a manual, some time to study it and the right tools and I bet it will be a successful upgrade.

I hope single 8GB, but kind of doubt it. Best performance is still dual channel, so that's what they probably do in any config.

The RAM can be upgraded but, judging from that picture, it does not seem an easy job. I hope people don’t have to slide out the motherboard out of the enclosure to remove/add the So-dimm from the slots...
On previous Mini you just unscrew the bottom and the RAM slots are right there. I can't see them changing it too much.

A poster on another website was complaining that you could only put 64GB of RAM in the new Mini. Some people are never happy.

Looked like a solid update to me. Up to 64 GB's of user-upgradeable RAM is certainly a nice surprise. Looks like the Mini is back in business indeed.

For me the GPU is too weak for a desktop though - I was hoping for the dGPU from the MBP. Also, it seems like it's non-standard SSD's again so you are stuck with very expensive options that push the unit price way up needlessly unless you like having little boxes hanging off the machine. Lastly, minor but: i5 processor instead of an i7 - it does seem to lack the oomph a bit in my experience (again, on the desktop). I was expecting an i7 like in 2012, given the rumoured 'pro' focus.

In no way an underwhelming update though - just not everything I had on my bucket list. And I do understand that they can't come out with a Mini that steals customers from their other product lines.

I had my sights set on the 6,1 Mac Pro as a fallback option and will now go for that and give it a chance. If it fails to delight then it'll go back and the mini may show up at my doorstep a bit down the road.

I mean seriously? You pop off a lid, and swap a coupleof DIMMs. Couldn't be easier.

it is easy to be 50 times as fast and beautiful compared to the previous generation if you did not upgrade in like 50 years

the price hike does not reflect the performance hike, imho

My desktop machine is already faster than a mini and my fully loaded rmbp still does is job pretty well. I'm not complaining about the mini, just the price!

It's sad that they deprecrate support after 5 years because most of the time, the hardware age very well (unless you do video production stuff).

It's a great value proposition. Frankly, you hook up some USB-C SSD, or even NVMe storage, and en e-GPU and the base model's adequate. Especially since you can pop in your own memory.

The only thing you might think about upgrading is the processor. You can do the rest on your own. It's a Mac Mini ownsers dream come true.

Base model already comes with SSD standard. And it cannot be upgraded.

I love how some people are complaining that this update is underwhelming. Were you expecting dual (socketed) Xeons, 128GB ECC RAM, a top-end discrete GPU all in the same mini enclosure? and let's not forget liquid cooling so the thing doesn't melt a hole in your desk.

I can see folks being upset about the price of the upgrades but geez, this was a really good update.
