What's a mac mini?

Oh yeah, I remember... They still make those?

Well it's a nice little box that looks like

but white and silver

slight performance hit

Slight? Its slower than a Celeron M. Its great for low power mobile phone/pda sized devices but don't expect it to be able to do much more than internet browsing in a modern desktop.

If they used a dual core Atom in the next Mini update, it would be slower than the first intel generation CoreDuo (not Core2Duo) Mini.

Look here to see how slow the atom is.

So that means there would now be current model Mac Minis going out of warranty.

Apple must have something planned for it. They can't have seriously forgotten about it like that. It has so much potential, but it just doesn't quite reach. Even if they just put an N wireless card in there, I'd buy one. 1.83GHz is plenty fast enough for a HTPC.

There's a strong consensus around this neck of the woods that the mac mini is a great product that should get updated more frequently and be kept much more competitive. You're unlikely to hear any disagreement about that in any Mac forum. Now if only we could all get Apple to act on it...

A 1.42 G4 Mini was the first new computer I ever bought from Apple. If they got rid of the junk integrated graphics and gave it some real graphic crunching power I would likely buy another.

Id like dedicated graphics too but im not sure if they would do this and leave the macbook with integrated. Although maybe the new macbook will have a low end card in it

It depends how many they're selling whether it's killed or not. If it wasn't profitable it would have been killed off ages ago.

I just think they should give it its annual speed tweak and give it a black top.

And maybe drop the price a bit.

dammit! then make it a lowest-end c2d. mac mini can't be slower than an apple tv!

Apple may be reusing the "Santa Rosa Special" chipset in the Mac mini. This would happen at about the next update to the iMac in early 2009.

:(

A total redesign would be awesome, since it is no longer the smallest computer in production (beaten by de EEE Box, though the performance isn't really comparable) I hope apple will twice down it's size, drop the price $100 and loose the optical drive which can be later purchased as an add-on.

a Mac mini with a BR drive would be great (but doubtful). i could then play all my ripped dvds (i've ripped all my dvds to .vob, but do not have any interest to convert them with handbreak). this would be the perfect solution since ATV doesnt stream them. then i could just hook the mini up to my TV with the external harddrives attached and i'd be set.

add Firewire 800 and i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

The annoying thing is at the moment the mini isn't that bad for a HTPC, but at the same time you get the nagging feeling that it will be updated *soon* and even if it isn't a hugely major update.. you still want it.

Still at the very least i'd like
  • N Spec Wireless (i still have to buy an n-spec router, but futureproofing is nice)
  • Merom chipset, good chance they'll stick us with peryin. but the advantages merom offer are nice.

Oh well, if it still isn't updated by the time the 'book family get theirs i might just grab a refurb.

I have a feeling the "Mac Air" is coming, and will offer the external superdrive is people desire. It will look like the Apple TV, but maybe it will have a black top rather than a white one. That's my guess.

Die, that thing is just ridiculous. Steve Jobs never intended for it to exist, and it shows.

Even with updated specs, a Mac mini is outrageously overpriced for a non upgradable box without any mouse and keyboard.
