2014 macmini + ssd + 16g ram is a freaking mean machine. I don't think we'll see a new MM before august. I still haven't found the limits of 2014 one :p

I'm new to thinking about what goes on with the mac mini so forgive my ignorance, but is apple's update cycle with it similar to the mac pro? Like they don't update it as much as their MacBooks and stuff. It's on like a bi-yearly basis?

Mac Mini updates have been as frequent as a couple or three times a year, to as infrequent as a couple of years or so apart. Latterly it has been more the latter.

The 2014 i7 has a bit larger cache.

Mac Tracker says:
Processor Speed 1.4, 2.6, 2.8 GHz (Core i5) or 3.0 GHz (Core i7)
Cache 3 MB (1.4, 2.6, 2.8 GHz) 4 MB (3.0 GHz) on-chip shared L3

Of course, it's unclear just how advantageous that is in real life...

With soldered RAM, 16G would always be a good idea - at least, if one intends to hold onto the system for as long as (economically and ergonomically) possible...
