I was looking to use the external HDDs for the media library as I only have a 120GB SSD in it at the moment for the boot drive. I could swap out the optical drive to keep the HDD internal though.
[doublepost=1485953189][/doublepost]At the moment I don't have it set up as a server. I've been using it to run a Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ using Midi Keyboards. I did have to add a bit of extra RAM to get it working smoothly because the sample sets are very RAM intensive. It isn't the home server just yet because the CPU cooling fan has failed. I'm surprised that it seems to hover at about 60-75 degrees celsius even without the cooling fan.

Yes ... the $20 server app for TimeMachine host. It also serves as a cache for the first-time download of apps or upgrades, then subsequent requests from other computers comes from the server rather than over the Internet again.

How do you setup the cache for the downloads?

I am new to this server stuff, and I could really use this. I have a slow connection, with all kinds of iPads and iPods in the house. Every update, the internet crawls to a stop because 4 iPads are downing updates and iCloud and photos from iCloud at the same time. Right now I just turn autoupdate off, but it would be awesome to just do it once.

Any suggestions for a newbie on setting a mac mini server. i have an extra mini doing nothing, just not the server experience.

Once you have the Server app installed on your Mini and have done the initial setup, simply select "Caching" on the "Services" list in the left pane of the window and turn it on. Then set where you want your Cache stored and how much space you want to allocate to it.
