I have a 2010 mini - the last one with the superdrive. When i got it i uograded to 4gb ram and have mainly been using it for a masssive WORD project using snow leopard. Now that the project is almost finished with no computer problems i'm thinking of going to 8 gb ram and the new mountain lion. Any benefit to all that.

Does anyone think 1866 kits will be availaible soon? I've been holding at 8gb, but I do have semi legitimate use for more ram.

Yup. Sandybridge chipsets auto configure the ram speed :)

There is no Sandybridge chipset. The memory controller is part of the CPU nowadays.

Memory controller supports up to 1600MHz RAM. You can buy it, but it'll run at 1600MHz

I suspect for the normal user, 8 GB RAM should be enough. However, 16 gig are cheap nowadays.

I personally can't cope with 8 gig any longer. I find myself always running out of memory when working in FCP X, Aperture, Motion and Pixelmator (yeah, I need most of them at the same time) while playing music through iTunes, browsing the web and using Mail. I can't even dream of using iTunes Author (to improve the script), Pages and Numbers ( to calculate the expenses) at the same time ... So if you're a heavy duty user, you'll appreciate every MB of RAM you can get, if you just do some basic video editing and web surfing, 8 gig should be sufficient.

How do you know?

kingston 1866 ram plug n play works at 1866

kingston 1600 ram plug n play works at 1600

these sticks were tested and results are on this site. if you are running a mini with 3000 graphics it will get some speed benefits.

as for the corsair the tests were done i don't remember them

Being the post starter and being that I live in Australia, I note the fantastic response by other posters buy I also request the following if at all possible.

As I buy most of my stuff from eBay (as I live so far from anywhere) can anyone give me a link to a specific set (name brand or not) of Ram 16GB (on ebay preferably as online stores jack up the price significantly to mail to Australia) that they have bought and used in their MM that works? It is not so much that I am lazy or un informed, I just want to try and get Ram that works because I hear of a few stories of non-compatibility even with name brands. I know OWC is a solid option but they are not the cheapest and mail is a little pricey. Also I am happy to go with 1333 or 1600 but I note 1333 is a lot more common.

Thanks,

Silver

You can search on Thunderbolt display flicker and discover a lot of people out there with the same problem. The mini + T-bolt display + 16 GB seems to be a bad combo. Other monitors, I'm not so sure - probably just fine though.

Never heard of this issue. I have 16GB of memory and 2x TB displays - no flicker whatsoever.

I upgraded to 16GB out of the box on my Mac Mini server. I always have at least 1 VM running, often 2 or 3 in addition to tasks inside MacOS.

Mine is Corsair, Value Select is the level I believe and I've had no trouble whatsoever with this in my system.

I'm going to assume your gruff tone and terse reply isn't intentional.

Here's the intel spec sheet for the CPU : link
Note the second section down labelled "Memory Specifications".

Chipset/PCH/Integrated memory controller information :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_Controller_Hub said:
The Platform Controller Hub (PCH) is a family of Intel microchips. I/O Functions have been reassigned between the PCH, a new central hub, and the CPU. Some northbridge functions, the memory controller and PCI-e lanes, were integrated into the CPU while the PCH took over the remaining functions in addition to the traditional roles of the southbridge.

Cougar Point is the codename of a PCH in Intel 6 Series chipsets for mobile, desktop, and workstation / server platforms. It is most closely associated with Sandy Bridge processors.

If it's running 1866 RAM at the native speed then it's running outside of the specifications. Why? I dunno.

Those specs only mention 1066/1333... I wouldn't call faster ram outside the spec, I'd just call that a bunk data sheet... Not meaning to be terse or gruff.

This is interesting, because I have a new Macbook Pro (Ivy Bridge 2.3) and I do have the flickering with the 16GB upgrade. I reverted to the original 4GB (ouch!) yesterday, just to test it, and had no flickering. Mind you, the flickering is pretty variable, so it could have been a fluke. The problem is that I really can't work with only 4GB of RAM (I regularly use large sample libraries, which take tons of memory), so I can't test it for any amount of time with only 4GB. If it's flickering again today I may try the 12GB option, just to see if it solves the problem.

I have dual heads on my system, and running 16GB, and see no flicker at all. But then I don't have the TB displays so that might be the reason. ;)

I have however, ran my mini on a friends collection of TB displays and haven't seen hint of it. So what it might be - someone who is a hardware guy might confirm or deny this - is production variations somewhere in the display chain allowing the flicker to happen.

Thats just my SWAG.

Mac mini 2010 model - upgrade to 16 gb ram?

Hi - I recently found this thread and I'm hoping to get some info about adding ram to my mac mini.

I have a Mac Mini, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM.

My machine is a Mid 2010 version, running the new OS Mavericks.

Is it possible for me to upgrade to 16 GB of ram? From this thread, it's unclear if my machine is too old? It was the last one to come with the internal superdrive (I think).

Any help would be appreciated. Also, anyone that has this particular model and has done the upgrade, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!
