Mac OS 8.2 Beta!

As most of you know I collect a lot of old Macs. Well today I found one in the attic that I forgot I had there, a PowerMac 7100. Well I went to boot it up and noticed something odd. The startup screen said 'Welcome to Mac OS Debugger Installed'. I wondered what that ment or what version of the OS was installed. So after the Mac started up I went to the Apple Menu and 'About this computer' and after an odd Mac OS X-like window effect I saw next to the happy Mac OS logo 'Mac OS 8.2d8'

Now I'm pretty sure there was no Mac OS 8.2, a google search confirmed this. I am very happy to find this. The Macintosh 7100 I've probably gotten at a yard sale has a beta Mac OS on it! The coolest thing about it is that when you open a window you get a odd, yet cool Mac OS X like opening effect. The windows minimize and zoom to a corner where they disappear!! Also on the hard drive is a DiskCopy Image file of the Mac OS 8.2 beta installer CD!! Seems like I hit the jackpot with a flea market computer. :D

Well anyway I got my iSight and took a video and a few snapshots. I think this is so cool, what do you guys thing?

Wow, that's crazy, I've never even heard of the 8.2 beta!!

Very cool LimeiBook86. A million dollar find!

I think I paid $15 for the machine :D I think I'll try and burn a disc of the image file and install it on my old beige G3 just to see if that window effect looks better. I think it looks bad because of the 7100's lousy video card :p

I wish more people could see this but there isn't a section in the forums for rare Apple software
 haha

$15...what a deal- a Mac & a prototype Mac OS!

You forgot the installer too! I ran the installer image file on another computer via my network and it had a little slideshow that told you about Mac OS 8 while it installed (Like Windows XP) I'll post those screenshots in a bit I have to hook up the computer again...which I just un-plugged... I think I'll leave the machine on, if anyone wants me to click on this or that just ask.

Also when you click on the 'Network Setup' control panel the system crashes (Shown in the Quicktime video :)) Odd eh?

I await your requests ;)

I think you should hook some of us up. I'm not sure if Apple will care now that they aren't developing it anymore.

I have a Powerbook 1400 it would be cool to install on! Cmon! ;)

You mean that Apple is not working on another release of Mac OS 8  ;)

Duff-Man says.....IIRC, OS 8.5 was labeled as 8.2 in the early stages, then they decided to up it to 8.5 so they could charge "full upgrade" price for it....oh yeah!

I wish I knew the history of this Mac and where it came from

The machine has an incomplete 'Appearance' (Will post pics in a bit) Control Panel and a 'Desktop Pictures' Control Panel Odd eh? It does feel like OS 8.5 a bit, and the window effect is just eerie, I wonder if they've been waiting to use that in an OS release and until OS X they finally could.

Possibly fun, here is an article (in German , autotranslated to English) about it from the time (they call it Allegro here, which means it was what became 8.5). Scroll down a page or two for the little write-up.

"Debugger Installed" just means you have the MacsBug debugger loaded. Developers always had MacsBugs installed, so we were used to seeing that message and the "crash" screen you snapped (MacsBug is a lifesaver when dealing with crashes). :) If you remove MacsBug from your System folder, the message will go away and crashes will just bring up the standard "bomb" dialog.

It sounds like you have someone's old dev machine. 8.2! Now, that's a find. It was code named "Allegro" and yes, as DuffMan says, eventually became 8.5. I'm sure "iCEO" at the time Steve Jobs had something to do with that. :D

8.1 ran on 68K, but 8.5 needed a PowerPC. Any idea what 8.2 will run on?

Edit: Judging by the "Accelerate" screenshot below, it likely requires a PowerPC.

Yeah forgot to mention that was installed, now I'm taking screenshots any requests?

D'OH!

I can't seem to transfer screenshots over to my other Macs. I guess Tiger doesn't like 8.2 and it doesn't helpt that the 'Network Setup' crashes the system. But I have my iSight and I'll post pictures in a few minutes. :D

As has been pointed out, the Debugger Installed is for MacsBug.

But I noticed in your video that you didn't get back out of MacsBug when it popped up on you (which I'm guessing is because you've never worked with it before). When that screen pops up type "es" (for escape to system) and then hit return. You should then be back to your system with only the offending application gone.

I have three systems running Mac OS 8.x and all have MacsBug installed on them. It is the best way to make sure that no one application takes out your system (it helps you take full advantage of Mac OS 8/9's partial protected memory).

Looks like Apple hadn't finished implementing the Copland appearance controls in the images you put up (they popped up in 8.5... minus the Copland themes), so from that I would guess this is a very early beta (pretty soon after the release of 8.1).

Congrats on your find!

What a find! Wow, makes me want a copy for sure! I too collect old Macs. Not too many but so far I have

2 - Apple IIe's
1 - Quadra 650
1 - Beige G3 DT (266mhz)
1 - rev a 12" a book

All but the IIe's have been used recently. Although I did learn how to do simple programing on the IIe's when I was in middle school. (Not part of school, did it on my own with some books.) The Quadra was a webserver until october last year and the beige and PB are being used right now for everything from photoshop, email, macrumors surfing and Seti@Home. Anyway, enough rambling about my stuff, all I have is standardized OS's...I want 8.2 lol Have you tried running some standard 8.1 programs? Or better yet, things that require 8.5?

I have those themes! The themes on 8.2 are Gizmo, High-Tech, and Apple Platinum! Screenshots below!! I always wanted them since I saw them in the OS 8 Tour CD, now I have them! :D I'm gonna try and install 8.2 on my PowerBook 5300cs

I was gonna post this in the Apple Collectors place but I thought more people would see it in the software section. Too many posts to keep up with, more screens coming!

Also 'Browse the internet' shortcut doesn't work, and the 3D palm tree is only a 2D image, you can't play with it like in older versions. Also the appearence control panel is very odd and with the high tech theme it looks like there are places to type everywhere! :D I don't know any programs that need 8.1 or 8.5 but if you name them I might be able to see if I have copy.

Wow, that is REALLY cool! The thing with the windows is awesome!

Mesa Dynamics, do you have another link to MacsBug? That link you posted didn't work. I'd like to have that for my PowerBook. I'm running 8.6 on it. Thanks in advance.
