Mesa Dynamics, do you have another link to MacsBug? That link you posted didn't work. I'd like to have that for my PowerBook. I'm running 8.6 on it. Thanks in advance.
I think you want to go here... but I wouldn't use that version of MacsBug with Mac OS 8.x.

Version compatibility of MacsBug:
  • 6.2.1 is the latest version for System 7.x
  • 6.5.4a6 is the latest version for Mac OS 8.x (that is the version I use with my 8.1 and 8.6 systems)
  • 6.6.3 (the version at the link above) is for Mac OS 9.x systems

Apple doesn't have the version I use (6.5.4a6) for download anymore, but 6.5.3 should work just as well for Mac OS 8.6. ;)

I had the MacsBug manual on my site for a while (for someone doing System 7 development) but took it down, if someone needs it, PM me.

I have those themes! The themes on 8.2 are Gizmo, High-Tech, and Apple Platinum! Screenshots below!!
Yep, those were the ones. I have the versions of those from Mac OS 8.5b6. It would be interesting to see if earlier versions (like what you have in 8.2) work in 8.5 and later like these do.

PowerBook 5300cs

I'm trying to install 8.2 on my PowerBook 5300cs but it has no OS and when I startup with the Disk Tools floppy it doesn't see my SCSI CD-ROM/RW drive but, it will boot off of a OS 9 CD-ROM. Problem is my 8.0 CD is cracked and I have to use a copy which won't boot up, and since 8.2 is a copy that won't boot up either. While I have everyone here, I might as well see if anyone knows how I can startup from a floppy that'll read my CD-ROM drive.

More pirctures in next post.

Installation screenshots

Here are some screenshots while 8.2 installed, also there is one of the System Overview from Apple System Profiler :)

You could try using an 8.5 Disk Tools Floppy. You may have better luck as far as CD-ROM support.

Thanks but it still doesn't wanna work. I think I'm going to have to see if I can get SCSI disk mode working and maybe install an OS through there. I'll post more pics tomorrow it's late. :)

Why is the Special menu shown as "Snowman"? LOL!

Beta/unfinished versions of Mac OS back in the day always replaced special with something different in order to immediately give them away. I remember one screenshot in MacAddict back in the day had the Special menu labeled "SneezeSeason".

Just install 9 and then launch the 8.2 installer from Finder. Select "Preform Clean Install". I have the slightest that that works. ;)

Yup, when you're installing new builds of the OS on several Macs several times a week, it's a good idea to have them readily identifiable.

It's so awesome. The genie type effect is so OSX-ish. The "themes" are awesome. I'm a longtime mac user and I never heard of any themes! I really like the High Tech one (the black look). Pretty cool. The system is really buggy though. Sometimes the menus have to be clicked all the way on the top instead of on the word. There are also things stuck all over the place for no reason, like blinking cursors, nonworking menus/pull downs, incomplete things. So awesome!

As has been pointed out, the Debugger Installed is for MacsBug.

Macsbug was quite handy for playing evil tricks on colleagues too - pop into Macsbug, type "att" (A-Trap Trace), then escape back to the OS. It'd slow their machine to a crawl, and they wouldn't have a clue why.. heheh...
;)

(I believe the command to clear it is "atc" (A-Trap Clear?))

Uploaded to PowerBook G4

Well I have the 8.2 disc image uploaded onto my PowerBook G4, I'm not going to post it here or I'd get killed. You may instant message me on AIM if you wish. It's like a 15 minute download.

I don't see anything really wrong with this since it's old, buggy, and rare. So why not share it? I don't think Apple is interested in keeping beta copys of OS 8 under-wraps. :D I wasn't going to say that out-loud, but I'm getting over 20 PMs about this so I wanted to just come out and say something

But I would more than understand if the Mods didn't want me to post anything so you guys have the power to delete this post if you feel you should. :)

Yay got it installed this morning. Works good. I took a lot of pictures and there's a 1 minute or so movie showing some neat stuff.

8.2 is running on my Powerbook 1400c/133 133Mhz 32MB RAM 1.3GB HD
It runs good, genie like window effect is choppy though and it's terribly buggy!

Pics and Movie are at: http://itasor.com/8point2/

Enjoy and thanks LimeiBook! :D :)

I'm pretty sure OS 8.6 had these themes. I remeber having several on my old G3 tower. Both apple and third party ones. And maybe OS 9 aswell. One of them definatly had it, just not sure which.

8.5 and later had the ability to work with themes, but the Apple themes that had been promised (and shown off) since around 1993 were removed before the final release of 8.5. Apple never included anything other than Platinum and even gave developers legal troubles when someone tried to make an application to create these themes.

Still, that didn't stop people from making them. I have quite a few myself, but the ones from Apple were supposed to have been covered under the NDA of those who had gotten the beta releases. But, again, that didn't stop any one from sharing them on the internet.

I doubt Apple cares now, but this was a big issue back in 1998/99, and I heard of more than a few people getting letters from Arent Fox (which is something that one would like to avoid).

Thanks! :D Yeah I had that pb when it was new....I remember the battery life was like 7.5-9 hours. Good stuff!

Duff-Man says.....IIRC, OS 8.5 was labeled as 8.2 in the early stages, then they decided to up it to 8.5 so they could charge "full upgrade" price for it....oh yeah!

You're funny. I thought I was the only one who knew who Duff-Man was. :)
