I know this will get a lot of flames and such, but I'm currently a windows user who is looking to get a new laptop- and the macbook seems a very attractive choice.

I am also very attracted to the features of windows vista- so my question is, how will leopard fare up to vista and vice versa- and how long will I have to wait for leopard.

And lastly- will apple release a macbook with intel merom in it once it comes out? OR will there be new laptops released before the holiday season that will be portable and student-friendly?

Right now Tiger has all of the touted features of Vista as far as I can tell. Microsoft is just playing catch up. Leopard should blow Vista away.

Leopard will be out in January.

The Morem will most likely go into the MacBook Pro's first. Then into the Macbooks once the Pro's get the next generation. At least that would make the most sense.

i can assure you that vista wont ship till about 2008. i would be willing to bet on it. Microcrap has already delayed if i recall right, a year and a half. Also will all the 60% code that had to be re-written, and more delays, it will be forever since they released a new os. remember that osx came out in 2000/2001. Long time since a new product, what kind of business is that? Very poorly managed one if u ask me. I think people would get pissed if car manufactures didn't release new models for 5/6 years. Pathetic...absolutely pathetic.

January?? don't you think apple will be smarter than microsoft, and release some better products for the back to school period and the holiday shoppiing season?

If I want the laptop for the school year, should i wait for leopard to come out or buy the upgrade to leopard?

You can't compare software that isn't out yet.

Wait until both Vista and OS X 10.5 come out and we can give you a better answer to your request for a compare and contrast.

If you're so eager to hear a response, then at the earliest wait until August when 10.5 is shown off, because all we know about 10.5 right now is that it's going to come out in 2006 or 2007. THAT'S IT.

Everyone can conjur up a compare and contrast, but let's be honest people, you don't know dick about 10.5, and Windows Vista isn't out yet.

If I were you I wouldn't buy a MacBook Pro just yet. Have you heard about all the problems people have been happening? Buying a MacBook Pro shouldn't be like playing the lotto and hoping you get a good one. Wait till ou stop hearing complaints. Same goes for the MacBook, it's proving to be troublesome as well.

EDIT: I also wouldn't take the advice of anyone who refers to a company as Microcrap or M$ or any other childish insult that proves his bias.

I have no doubt that Leopard will introduce some great new stuff. As mentioned before, Tiger seems to have everything that Vista is striving to bring to Windows. What will Leopard offer that Vista won't? I can tell you that there will be features, most likely all of the new features introduced in Leopard. Of course, nobody can say much about what those will be until Jobs steps up to the mic at the WWDC and tells us. Can't wait. Jobs's speeches are always great. Windows was never this fun.

Well, it's a bit tough to do any sort of comparison seeing as Vista is still a beta and 10.5 doesn't as yet exist in any way for us to determine anything beyond a few features:

- resolution independence
- Boot Camp fully integrated

That's pretty much all we know about 10.5 and will remain that way until WWDC in August.

Well you don't need to wait for Leopard to get Vista features, Tiger which is more than a year old has almost all the features (equivalents)

Leopard will just bring the Mac even more in front of Vista ;)

has resolution independence officially been announced as a feature of 10.5?? I thought that was a rumor?

It's a rumor - but there's plenty of evidence to show that this capability is coming.

The capability already exists in Tiger, but is only available to developers (or those willing to run Quartz Debug). Unless Apple have made an about face on this, I expect it to be a fully fledged feature of Leopard.

That is the most flawed post i've ever read!

I want this so much.

Haven't been around much lately? :D

Anyway, yeah, I agree with most of the posts above. Tiger is in essence Vista. Leopard will exceed it. This isn't because MS is inept - it's because they're too worried about making stuff backwards compatible with old OS versions, and it cripples them. Vista is XP SP4, really. Too bad, because as originally promised it was pretty exciting.

Anyway, obviously you can run Vista on a MacBook but with reduced graphics, so you're not stuck with OS X (not that I think you won't like it). I'd wait to buy for a while, but I don't expect any HW change before school starts, and Leopard won't be out for some time - they're just going to start talking about it late summer. Of course, Apple doesn't tend to announce a new OS, oh, years before releasing it, but still, early '07 is when it'll come out.

but we do know about the history involved.

10.5 is simply an extension of what began with 10.0. you can look at 10.4 and have some idea of what is going on.

you can also look at XP and see that it is almost exactly 2000 in a new theme. 2000 is just the 98 theme on NT. how old is NT now? MS is making a minor change to a system more than a decade old. almost all the major changes they claimed it would bring have been dropped, and they are rewriting it AGAIN as i type this. do you think it will finally get a real feature?

and now symantec is in court to stop it because of the dozens of features that where planned, 1 of the 2 that are left was stolen. wow, should be a great upgrade.

and companies like gartner and telling people to stay away in droves. i know i am looking forward to it!

10.5 on the other hand will most likely be like every other 10.x upgrade. a handful of new features, some performance improvements, and one or two spiffy new headline grabbers that will have the forums in laces like this arguing for a month or two.

no, we don't know what is going on for sure yet. but history has some advice. i don't trust a person with a history of crime as a house sitter, and i don't trust MS (with their history) with an operating system.

Another thing is that Quartz 2D Extreme should finally be finished and turned on by default. One would think, anyway.

Apple's philosophy is quite simple. They release a product, then as soon as sales have leveled off, they release one to make the previous product look lame.

I love Apple, but that's exactly what they do, whether they intentionally do it or not.

That probably isn't the reason that Leopard isn't being released until January, but it might be a factor.

I study business and the best way for Apple to make money would be to sell a bunch of computers with Tiger over the holiday season (most likely the new processors will be out for the holidays) and then right after a bunch of people have bought computers and the holiday season is over, they'll release Leopard so all the people who just bought computers will now have to buy Leopard in addition to the new computer they just bought. This makes for maximum sales for Apple. They'll probably put out the Intel PowerMac pretty soon after the holidays as well, if it's ready.

I know this makes Apple sound like an evil corporation, but most successful companies do some evil things.

Daniel.

OK, but you know this, so you don't have to worry about being fooled. Besides, if they are able to release a product that improves on the old one (which by all accounts is pretty good already), then who's going to complain?

You started a thread asking which is better, Mac OS X 10.5 or Windows Vista?

Lemme guess, your next thread is gonna be "Which tastes better, Chocolate or cow poop?"

What kind of a topic is this?

don't you think microsoft will use this "time" advantage- as in microsoft creating a bunch of buz about vista- to make features that blow vista away?

and then release it BEFORE vista, so buyers will buy macs and then not buy vista when it comes out?

i study business too- and the cost benefit of not capitalizing over the holiday season is just too large- something that microsoft may be able to afford- but apple, not. you see, apple is just starting to become big- people are noticing them- but if they fade away one more time, they've lost their chance.

just my two cents.

Well I guess that means 95% of the world likes cow poop. Ha ha.
