Directory won't let me add entries

Are there any other girlies on this forum or am I the only one???

Like to say thanks to all the experts for posting their advice. Can you post some for me please? (Flutter)

I'm an ACHDS and freelance Mac consultant. Currently teaching myself Leopard Server from the Server Essentials book.

Am having LOADS of trouble even with the Standard configuration on my home network. e.g. the server loses connection with itself, my password stops working, etc...

1. My CURRENT problem is that Directory won't allow me to add entries. I have re-installed Server several times to reset everything back to scratch. AM I BEING DUMB???

2. I am using a Standard Configuration and Server Assistant automatically picked up the DNS Hostname "Mac-Mini.home" - where is it getting this from? I actually gave it this DNS name manually on a previous installation, but this time it picked it up automatically. (Is it from the computer name set in the router? I did just configure the router to always use the same IP address for this machine.)

I have a BT HomeHub and am using a Powerline Ethernet adaptor to provide the Server with an Ethernet connection. Could this be giving me the random problems I've been seeing?

3. I don't fully understand the relationship between Primary DNS name, FQDNS and local hostname. What confuses me is the Server Essentials book uses a .com for this - presumably that's dependent upon DNS services running on the network?

My 3 month old baby girl is crying for attention... better end it there!
Thanks in advance x

More info on Directory problem...

The problem is not just Directory, I am also unable to use iCal. It is rejecting my password.

Having checked the logs I can now report that there seems to be a Kerberos problem. It says contact your system administrator... but I AM the system administrator!!

I'm so alone in this World :-(

I'm not a girl ... LOL, but am a newbie with OS X Server just like you.

FWIW: I found that the Basic/Standard Config never worked for me when I tried to set it up. I think I may have tried 4 re-installs altogether. And I found the whole thing a little confusing partly because people who offer advice use acronyms a lot which I found difficult to relate to "things I had to do".

With that said, I now have OS X Server 10.5.2 running very sweetly on a G4 Mac Mini. I ended up resorting to the Advanced Configuration - which I shied away from initially because it sounds daunting to a newbie.

I found 2 resources exceptionally helpful:

  1. These video Tutorials for $25
  2. The steps in Antonio Rocco's 2nd post in this thread

Maybe have a think about re-installing using the steps suggested by Antonio Rocco, and I followed them precisely.

Maybe your problems will be resolved through this route more quickly and cleanly than trying to figure out the actual cause of the symptoms you have reported.

Cheers
MacP

Excellent advice Macpomme. I must say, OSX Server is a lot of fun. Not fun like watching a movie or having sex, but more like trying to solve a rubics cube. As easy, brainless and obvious OSX Client is, OSX server is not. For anyone thinking of trying OSX Server out, If you are thinking you just click the install button and everything just works, think again. It works, but it doesn't just work ;)
