No they never drop back out. Once you have restart after the EFI upgrade, you will never restart with only having one available. And this isn't an issue, this is NORMAL for the upgrade. Anyone who has done this reports that their first start up after the EFI upgrade only registers one processor and a restart fixes it. There is no reason to "send your processors back"....

Hey Thanks. One of the reasons I am a bit worried is that Temperature.app seems to not read the CPU Core 1 and CPU Core 2 intermittently. All of the other cores CPU Core 3-8 seem to be fine. The temp score for CPU Core 2 seems to drop out more often.

I tried iStat and it seems to have the same issue.

Is this a cause for concern about the CPU going bad?

Thanks..

If something was broken with old microcode, they would have included such fixes in a 1.1 Firmware update imo.
Not for CPU's that were never offered or officially supported, like the x5355's...

Unfortunately, my system went back to one dual-core processor momentarily. I had to boot off an external USB HDD loaded with 10.5 to perform a graphics card firmware update and when I rebooted into Lion, my 1,1 (converted to a 2,1) only displayed one chip. I simply rebooted 10.7 and everything was peachy. So, it may happen.

Hello!

I just upgraded the processors on my mac pro 1,1 from 2x2.66 dual cores x5150's to 2x3.0 quad cores x5365.It boots perfectly with OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 installed with Piker-alpha efi etc, but I can't see the upgraded it was succesful because in system info I get " 2 x 3.0 Unknown "...yes, with 8 cores and the Ati 5770 1 GB recognized perfectly.... . I did it with the "Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool" following the instructions.I shutdown system, I press the button until flashes lights off, I have tried until "beep" appears...but nothing..

The bot ram version is :
MP11.005C.B08
smc VERSION IS :
1.7F10

Please, any help? I 've reading tons of posts here, and from other places than try to explain how to do it..I 've spent almost an enterily week investigating how to update my Mac pro 2006 with a fresh install of El Capitan, more and more time to find the simple way to let Mac pro update to the new versión of 10.11.3...The difficult part is over!! I thought...:( and when at least, I rise the very easy part to update firmware with that tool, all perfect except it don't know what cpu's is running...I so tired! May be in some place here there is the solution, but as I said, I tested a lot of things but nothing.

If anyone knows the solution, I will be more than happy, believe me...

THX for advice and for this amazing source of resources than is Macrumours.

repeat the procedure from within Snow Leopard.

It works in SL, ML, Mavs, Yose and El Cap without problems. Last one require SIP disabling.
I used Lion too short to flash any MP under it, so can't confirm it personally, but it should work as well.

Hi Xaviduch,

I am in the exact situation as you, running El Capitan with the 8 Core upgrade. For me, I also happen to have a Windows 7 Partition (using http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=25823997 as the way to install it) and my Windows 7 Partition recognizes it thankfully. If you find a way to fix it, please respond to my post so that I can fix my Mac Pro.

If I find a fix, likewise, I will inform you

Thanks
Matt

Ummm - the fix was mentioned three and two posts above yours, wasn't it?

I downloaded MacPro2006-2007FirmwareTool which was posted by MacEFIRom from netkas.
But the software tells me "This program requires Internet access..." when I run it. I'm sure my Mac Pro 1,1 is connected to the Internet well. After I clicked OK button, the software closed automatically.
Have you met this problem?

Mabe someone can help me:
I tried to flash under 10.75. My Mac booted and flashed the firmware. After the firmware flash both CPU LEDs are on.
Is there anything left to try?
I have never read, that someone killed his Macpro Board!

Can you boot into OS X?

I had very high CPU temperatures after my first firmware flashing.
The things that helped are resetting SMC and NVRAM, or downgrade and second upgrade.

What I did was do the firmware flash, when it gave directions to restart by holding power button, I shutdown the Mac Pro.

Turned it on and press/hold the power button until you get a long beep followed by the Apple chime...then you can let go. It'll show a blank grey screen and then a short while later, the Apple icon with a progress bar. After that, it'll boot back into your OSX desktop.

About this Mac showed Mac Pro 2,1 model identifier, however Processor showed 1. Just reboot your Mac Pro, and check the system info again and it'll show 2.

Thanks for your replies!
I tried the EFI recovery CD but the MAC didn't boot even from this CD.

Finally i took the whole machine apart and used the Powersupply for another broken 3.1.

I currently have a 1,1 Mac and only have the original dual core cpu installed right now. Eventually I would like to upgrade it to 2 quad cpu's. Will flashing it before I get the new cpu have any bad effects....basically is there any reason not to upgrade to firmware 2,1

It won't, i flashed mine 1,1 long before i got quad Xeons.
Just flash it in something older than El Capitan for less hassle (disabling SIP and so on...).

I have a 2006 1,1 Mac Pro, with x2 dual core 3.0 GHz Xeon chips. I also am running pike's efi and am on 10.11.6 El Cap. Is there any reason to or not to install the 2,1 firmware?

Are you holding down the power button until the tone? I.e. Hold down the power button until you get three flashes from the LED power light and then hear the tone and then release? If you don't hold it down long enough, you will see the loading screen flash for about 2 seconds and then kick out to OSX. I just did a firmware update on my 1,1 (not to 2,1) and I wasn't holding down the power button long enough and couldn't figure out why it wasn't loading properly...ooops

I’m having that problem. When I get home I’ll try holding it until I hear the boot chime.

Hi guys. Newbie to this firmware upgrading thingie... I feel like an idiot now because I can't get the bloody thing to upgrade. I downloaded the "Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool" and followed all the steps. All I get is a quick glimpse of the firmware updating screen, literally for a split second. Then the thing boots normally, but WITHOUT upgrading my system to 2,1

What am I doing wrong?

I have the original dual core Xeon 3.0ghz cpus, 32gb Ram, 250gb SSD, no other drives installed (no optical either). I also have an ATI Radeon X1900XT installed... dunno if that has anything to do with it.

Please help. I have a dying iMac and I'm hoping this Mac Pro will help me get through to next spring.
