lewdvig - thanks

Intel chips have a tremendous amount of headroom. I'd wager that almost any socket 771 1066 FSB XEON will work fine in a Mac 1,1 at 1333 FSB (with pin mod or ZDNet Clock).

Regarding Xeon 5150s - I think $100 shipped for a matching pair is a fair price. I'll be listing them on eBay in a couple of days.

Going from 4x2.66GHz to 8x2.33GHz? Yes, you'll see a difference for sure.

Sorry to drop in on this but I just bought the this upgrade ($280) and I am confused, does this mean that I will see a degradation on most apps dropping to 2.33GZ? I have a 2007 MP1,1 and I was planning to overclock to 2.66 but it
appears that I can't run it...
When I open the clock app it responses with:

In this version of ZDnet Clock only MacPro computers are supported.

ANy recommendations/thoughts

You're probably in 64bit mode it wont run in that. No you won't see a big difference in most apps in terms of degredation.

I can't notice the difference in day to day when I dropped from 4x2.66 to 8x2.33. However I do notice a huge improvement in handbrake encoding which I do a lot of. Warms my heart (and the room) to see all 8 cores light up in istat menus :)

Be aware that when you overclock with Zdnet clock that the system clock runs fast by about 15%. It resets to proper time whenever you open the time preference panel and it syncs up.

I didn't think that the Macpro1,1 could even run in 64bit mode?

It can't exactly, but it can boot into a mode where it's 64bit in someway, I don't really understand it, but when it's in "64 bit mode" it wont run Zdnet clock.

The Mac Pro 1,1 could run in 64bit mode if Apple unlocked it in firmware. The machine itself is perfectly capable. Apple:rolleyes:

Yup. No problem running Windows 7 64 bit on my Macpro1,1 so there is no real 64 bit boundary. Just Apple's hardware policy in the way.

Downside of the macpro 1,1 is that you can't play steam; counter strike source - it says the model isn't supported.

This is odd- I own the Mac Pro 1,1 (two dual-core Xeons = quad), and it plays Steam for Mac + CSS just fine.

That is a good price, but if you spend a lot on upgrades, you would be better off with a new Mac Pro.

Great thread!!!!

Lots of good info, and helped me decide to just keep my 1,1. My Mac Pro still runs great, I'm just a tinkerer, so I think I'll throw a bit of money at it and see what happens.

So here's my question. I have a 2 x 3.0ghz dual core chips. It seems like most people here are moving from 2 x 2.66 dual cores to 2 x 2.33 quads, but no one is dropping from 3.0 all the way down to 2.33's. Would I see a big hit doing this? I use this as my day to day work machine, and PS CS5 and FCE with Canon 5D mk2 RAW files and video. Thanks for any input!

Not sure if the apps you are describing are going to make maximum use of the extra cores. In my case I do a lot of handbrake encoding which uses all 8 cores. But most other apps can not really use the cores so the clock frequency is better at 3.0GHz than 2.33GHz. It does feel nice to see 8 cores in iStat menus but you may actually be better with 4 @ 3.0GHz. It is a no brainer for someone with one of the 2.0GHz quads to go to 2.33 octo. Much much harder decision for your case...

The other option, which I'm sure has been mentioned.
I can trade-in my 1,1 Mac Pro, keeping my HD's, barebones for a 2009 4 core Nehlly, 6 gigs of ram for $1200, no HD. For me just scratching up the last few $$ to do this.
Also the place I can get it from is selling for new with the 1 year base warrantee and I may just do the extra 2 year applecare later.

2009 Nehlam MP for $1200? Id get that over the 1.1...however

If anyone wants to see the performance of Mac Pro various CPU see the geekbench results...an upgraded MP 1.1 with 2 x5355 CPU is similar to the 2.8 8 Core...and 2.66 2009 not much faster...

2.66 8 core definitely faster than a 3.0 quad...

$1200 for a 2009 MP? I must be looking in the wrong places. Where did you find that?

Now for my next question....

So I'm on the fence about upgrading the CPU's, but how about the RAM? I have 8 gigs now in a 2x4 config. At some point, maybe 2 years from now, I'm going to completely replace this machine, so if I upgrade the RAM now, should I just go with another 8 gigs in a 2x4 config, of should I spend more and do a 4x2 config so I can always add another 8 later this year? Would I ever really need 24 gigs of RAM for CS5 and FCE? The price difference between 2 sticks and 4 sticks is about $50, so not a huge amount, but $50 is still lunch for a full week.
