Correct me if I am wrong, but is there really such a thing as a "file version" of boot.efi?

Yeah, maybe my wording was not completely adequate. By "version" I meant something what differentiates one from another. It could be creation/modification date or something more unique to the file like MD5 hash.
Someon skilled in programming could decipher this mechanism (if it exists ofc ;)) by examining updater package. But this is beyond my skills.

Saturday, Shmaturday!

I have done the update, and have found as Peloche did, 13C39 -> 13C44 overwrites boot.efi, needing us to re-apply Tiamo's to get functionality returned.

My system is now back up and running fine with 13C44, having done the reapplication.

No time to check out anything else until VERY much later today.

Regards,

-Rob

btw just to confirm on a 1,1 -> 2,1 MP 3.0ghz 16gb ram GTX285.

Hmm, it must be some mechanism which compares file versions. I updated my 5,1 installation to C44 and both boot.efi files weren't replaced.

Hi 666sheep,

You have got apparently a Mac Pro 5.1, all MP 5.1 are Mavericks compatible so imho you don't need Tiamo's file.

Yep, but I also have 1,1 flashed to 2,1 with 10.9.1 which is my GF's everyday workhorse. For that reason I'm testing beta seeds on my 5,1, not on 2,1. 2,1 gets final releases only, but for various testing purposes I'm replacing boot.efi on 5,1 HDD and putting it to 2,1. My /usr folder was left intact after C44 update and there's no sign of boot.efi replacement in Core Services - when updated on 5,1.

ok.

10.9.2 (13C44) is Working

I ended up creating a USB Boot SSD I can test before converting the main system. It confirmed that 10.9.2 (13C44) works fine on a Mac Pro 1,1/2,1 flashed and converted with HD-4870 card. Trim enabler also works.

After confirming on the USB drive, I upgraded the 10.9.1 system. On reboot I booted into Lion, updated the boot.efi and plists with my installer to avoid "clumsiness."

All worked. Another reboot to enable trim and all is go!

Alas, messages was killed in this exercise and not saved after reverting - darn...

Ml 10.8.5

Just to follow up from my post on the previous page on using Tiamo's boot.efi with 10.8.5, I just replaced boot.efi in the 2 places, blessed the volume and directory, and ML boots natively and everything works.

To replace boot.efi, I did not boot using another drive; I just opened terminal while logged in, signed in as root, and unlocked and removed boot.efi from existing locations; then copied over tiamo's; re-booted.

I don't know how to make sure kernel cache is always on (as Tiamo advises for ML use, earlier in the thread); so, am not sure there won't be problems later; but, so far, so good….

Hmm… I wonder….?

Still works fine here, both incoming and outgoing.

I'm still signed in to all my accounts, including icloud.

Yes, I am not sure what the mechanism for their security seed is. In the past, eventually (e.g. in weeks instead of days) something timed out and it started working again, or something in the chain changed, since I have three Macs and 5 iDevices on my account. Update in place might be better than doing it on another machine.
It would be nice, if somebody reverse engineered the mechanism and conditions that set this...

Only thing with the 7300 is that even it's recognised and works, appears as having only 9MB of VRAM which causes some flickering and of course don't work well with video (actually new iMovie doesn't install).

I'll buy a 8800 which seems to work, but if anybody has some idea of what may be happening, I'd like to try the original setup

Thanks again

I have the same problem as you with the original Geforce 7300 graphic card. I have ordered a GTX660 to try.

In fact I have other problem and Mavericks in MacPro1,1 does not recognize 2 RAM slots. So I have lost 4Gb total...

I am going to clarify to myself. Found 2 512Mb faulty memory modules. Removed and now I got the complete 12Gb.

So no associated "loosing RAM" problems associated to the Tiamo's hack.

Absolutely, because it would be impossible ;)
I was about to suggest checking pair by pair - my 2,1 also lost a single gigabyte (my last two genuine 512 MB DIMMS bailed out) but after switching their positions they came back to life.

MacPro 1,1 & Mavericks

First - many thanks to Tiago !!!

I have a couple issues I'm trying to work through:

(a) I've proven I can follow instructions having successfully loaded Mavericks on my MacPro 1,1. However the AUDIO will not work. There is no output device showing in preferences. I performed STEP 1c using the KextUtility. Without having audio, I performed STEP 3c and 4c. And installed VoodooHDA. Still no luck.

(b) For whatever reason, I simply could not get the AppStore to permit me to download Mavericks. So, I pulled it from another computer in our home with another AppleID. Now, I can't download updates. This makes me feel like Apple has its hands around my neck. Help.

Up and running OS 10.9.1 on a Mac Pro 1,1 with flashed PC ATI HD5770. I'm pretty sure my Mavericks download from the App Store was 10.9.1 because I don't recall seeing an OS update after I installed from the USB flash key.

Many thanks to Tiamo and everyone else for posting their experiences along the way!

I have the same graphic card, ASUS EAH5770, and i have patched the bios with netkas EFI, it's correctly recognized by the system but now sometimes I have GPU hangs or kernel panic.

In the console there is the GPU ASIC Log because it was in hang state =0x00000000
Another time i had a kernel panic
Code:
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff800f6dc19e)
Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.3.6)
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
com.apple.kext.AMDSupport(1.1.4)

and other graphics kext

The problem is that is a sporadic issue and not reproducible, i tried to stress the cpu/gpu with cinebench but nothing.

Please can you help me?
Thanks, thanks for advice in advance.

May be this will give a clue…

I don't know whether I'm particularly unlucky, but, I have four ASUS cards - three have failed. Two Nvidia (GT 630 and 640) failed with transmitting false or out of range resolutions to the displays, and my 5770 failed with not knowing it's a display card any more.

My MSI, Sapphire, XTX, and EVGA are all seemingly living long and happy lives despite being swapped around machines on a not infrequent basis.

However, assuming the 5770 has not died a death, reflash it back to it's original ROM or try using M5770.ROM or M57702.ROM (search netkas' forum for the links).

Correct, current downloads are 10.9.1

3x MacPro 1,1 SSD STUCK with 8GB on all of them

First-of TIAMO... thanks.... at least i'll get to enjoy my MacPro's 3 more years..

ALL Maverics 10.9 fresh Installs

Audio Works Just Fine, Ati XT1900 on MACPRO1, Nvidia GTX570 on MACPRO2, Nvidia GeoForce 210 on MACPRO3

FIRST
Issue.... all 3 Machines will not take more than 8GB of Ram, If I shutdown and Add the other 4x2GB Modules (all modules same brand/model), I will get a Verbose kernel panic saying "could not scan Kext". Actually I was not able to install with more than 8GB of ram

SECOND
Issue is the MACPRO2, IT will restart every now and then...specialy after loading Premiere Pro CC, I already updated Premiere

The Third Issue is, on all 3 MACPRO, Adobe Lightroom 5 will not work, the error "error when trying to change module panes" which, seems to be affecting worldwide, with no way to fix at the moment.

----------

My HD5770 is also a Sapphire.

Running an eVGA GTX 570 HD here, with no problems on Lion up to 10.7.5, but Mavericks seems to be acting up.

Purely subjective obs on my part:

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 firmware and SMC updated to 2,1 spec - I have had 16gb ram installed in it since 10.6.8 with no issues whatsoever at any time (due to ram). 8gb is Apple type chunky heatsink stuff, whereas the remaining 8gb is the normal server type slimmer heatsink ram.

The significant difference between the 1,1 and 2,1 is that the 1,1 runs PC5300 667mhz ram and the 2,1 runs PC6400 800mhz ram. Though the 1,1 can run either type.

The issue on your 2nd MP could suggest that it's power supply has seen better days, but that is very much a guess on my part.

Thanks for raising the issue of LR5 because I've been meaning to install it on my MP, but never got around to it - I tend to use Aperture myself. I wonder where I put the LR box? - the serial's on it….

Today my MP has a Sapphire 5870 Vapor oc in it, yesterday it had a GTX 285 in it - tomorrow's looking like a GTX 560 TI… Indecisive? Moi?

-Rob

ps Currently running 10.9.2

On the 16GB Issue I was running all 16GB on Lion 10.7.5 but it would never let me instal 10.9 with more than 8GB... and if I added them afterwards I would get a kernel panic when booting up...

Ok so I swapped the GTX570 to the 1st MACPRO and same problem, I boot up and as soon as I open an app that will kickstart the graphics card, ex. Premiere, or even try to update the drivers, and waMMM it restarts....

Maybe I will try a fresh install... is there a a 10.9.2 Image available yet? or do I have to do updates afterwards?

Seems like card is the culprit, not the MP. How do you power it? I've used 6+8 pin cards in my 2,1 and even during Furmark never had a single PSU overload. But I'm always using minimum 17 or even 15 AWG power cables. Apple ones are more like 22 AWG.

Your "16GB issue" is pretty strange, I've never seen anything like this before and I had 32GB in mine for some time with 10.6 and 10.9.
10.9.2 is still in beta stage. No public download.

I tried M57702.ROM but Atiflash was not able to flash my card with that rom so I decided to reflash the card with the original firmware.
Up to now ( 3 hours )I have not had panics or hang. But obviously in SystemProfile my card is now recognized as ATI Radeon 5000 1024 MB.

Thanks for advice.
