Seems like everybody loves this thing, guess I'll try one, can't believe how cheap it is.

I hope you read and found the review informative. It truly is a marvel at it's price. IMO the only thing that could make it better would be independent controllers for each port, but almost no one does that, and the one's that do, have a less desirable overall product (again, that's my personal opinion).

I'd buy a 2010 Mac Pro. Plenty of upgrade room and can match the nmp is certain setups. The upgradeabilty is a huge bonus!!!

It looked like a well-rounded solution, so I ordered a couple, one for my hex and one for my 12-core, keeping one MP on Snow Leopard for now.

Thanks for the tip.

Good Price - Used 2010 Mac Pro(12-core) price?

What is a good price should I buy a used oMP Mid-2010?

i come by another oMP 2010 and here is the spec:
I'd like to buy one for video/music/photo editing

CPU: 2x2.93GHz 6-core Westmere (5.1, 12 core Intel Xeon)
64Gb Ram
DVD drive x 2
500Gb SSD drive x 1
2TB HDD x 3

I have a Macbook pro 2011 2.3GHz i7 (SSD) and iMac 2011(2.7GHz i5) too.
Wonder if I should buy this Mac Pro and sell MBP or iMac..
Will it be significantly faster for video/music/ photo editing using oMP?(2x or 3x? In which apps?)
Though I see I'll lose thunderbolt port only/and SATA 6G...

Any advice/suggestion from similar users here?
Thanks a lot in advance!:)

Any advice?

Should I buy a used 2010 and upgrade the GPU myself,
Or it 's preferably to buy a nMP with base configuration?

Which choice will be better considering price/performance ratio?
I will use it for video and music production, thanks.....

The 2010 Mac Pro is certainly capable of handling video and music production.

I believe you could get a 2010 and replace the GPU for less than the $3000 it will cost for the nMP.

How much less depends on whether you want single or dual CPU. If you want a 6-core processor (or processors), then that will add cost, as well.

If your budget allows for the new one, then get that one.

^^^^It may not be four years old. I bought my 2010 5,1 nine months ago. It was brand new. So, it depends on when it was first sold and the box was first opened.

My last Mac Pro, a 3,1 2008 Mac Pro was bought in in early 2009 and was still going strong when I sold it almost 5 years later. There are many threads in this forum about folks still using 1,1 and 2,1 Mac Pros.

They are very durable.

Lou

I personally wouldn't get anything older than a 3,1, but yeah they're all fantastic machines.

It really depends on what you need. If you need TB, dual graphic card, a small machine on your table, etc. Then of course the nMP.

On the other hand, the oMP's can give you internal DVD ROM, HDD slot, PCIe slot, etc. If you prefer to have these stuff inside the case, then of course go for the oMP.

However, if you don't care about all these stuff, for the same among of money, most likely you can get a more powerful oMP.

You can just as easily have dual or triple graphic cards in the older Mac Pros.

Is there any place online that ships that USB 3.0 PCI card to Canada? I can't find it on ebay either.

Thanks!

I'll look into it. I think SpringRain will, but I heard you have to make special arrangements due to the extra shipping costs.

You could try contacting the Amazon seller directly also. They might make arrangements for you too.

Agree. In fact, I just want to point out that if we try to build an oMP with the same spec as the nMP, I think it won't be much cheaper then a nMP. In this case, it make sense to go for something new.

However, if that's not something he need (or the 2nd graphic card is completely useless for him), I believe it's more cost effective to choose the oMP.
