Just a quick update on this issue - the service engineers have been able to replicate the problem of the machine failing to boot and are now investigating replacing the power supply which may be the culprit. More information as I get it!

Rendering problems - the saga continues

Received this computer back from the service engineer today - after powering it on (no problem) decided to continue the Cinema 4D render it had failed with to make sure it was all working fine - now this is an easy animated render 2 minutes a frame so hardly strenuous - sadly after 40 minutes I had a kernel panic which caused a full hardware restart - this was repeated after another 8 minutes of rendering.

Spoken to the service engineer who want me to reinstall the entire system over the weekend to see if that fixes the problem - we'll see. Kind of sick of having to play at computer engineer instead of getting on with my work!

They say they've replaced the power supply - but since the computer still isn't doing as it should I still can't say whether that was it or if a combination of factors was at play - never had a kernel panic on this machine till I got it back from the service engineer today. Now I have to decide whether to reinstall Mavericks as I was running or move up to Yosemite - either way I know I've got a busy weekend of installing and testing ahead of me with no guarantee that it still isn't a hardware issue!

OK now this is getting really weird. Was checking the system specs on this mac and it was reporting 24GB of Ram installed when I have 32 GB of Ram installed (4 x 8GB Kingston chips). I have visually inspected all 4 chips are in place. Restarted and it reports 32GB of Ram again!!

I've retrieved the Kernel Panic reports from the log file and will add these below - I don't know enough to interpret them - if any very helpful person can shed any light that would be great.

On one of the restarts it also hung on the apple screen with a load of black and white text!!! Like this

Would I just be wasting my time re-installing the operating system - is this clearly a hardware fault??

You have a few options here,

A. Take it to an Apple Store, every Mac comes with a standard one year warranty (Not sure but I think UK laws extend this warranty also). See what they say, it's always nice to have a second look.

B. Run a Memtest, you get here by holding D at startup and going into the extended tests. Memory/RAM should be there. If any of the ram Modules fail the memory test, then I think you could your culprit.

Best of Luck to you, Flying. I always hate seeing content creators brought down by Computer issues, when they are 100% needed for 3D modeling now.

I've spoken to a friend who's a genius at an Apple store and he was stumped - they've not really had any problems with the new mac pro he said!

I'll try a men test and see if that reports anything - I'm loath to just do a full reinstall only to find it is still a hardware issue - too much software to re-authorise

No it was brought brand new last May from one of the biggest apple retailers in the UK - jigsaw systems!!

If they replaced the power supply they probably had to basically disassemble the Mac Pro. Throw in 4-5 trips through a package delivery system and there is a slm chance something has shaken loose or isn't seated properly.

The easiest elements to take out and reseat are the RAM and the PCI-e SSD. I'd try that before went to something offsite. ( if there is RAM 'missing' then best to go to system profiler and see which one it says is 'gone'. )

On physical inspection all the Ram is there - but sometimes it reports that it isn't!! I'm not a computer tech - I'm not geared up for anti static precautions - I think I would probably risk doing more damage than help at this stage

I think you have been more than patient. That's three repairs/diagnostics including when they said everything was fine, right?

I would try to speak to a manager at either apple or where you bought it from and have the whole computer replaced with an identical model at this point. I think that is reasonable.

Yeah I suggested that today and they didn't seem too keen, I think it will end up with that but they will have to be dragged kicking and screaming all the way. I'm going to run the full extended memory test tomorrow morning and if that shows nothing I'm going to do a full re-install, and just load on Cinema 4D and a test scene to see how it behaves - I've managed to knock it into another kernel panic this evening trying to find out what causes the problem - basically from a 3D rendering perspective the machine is totally useless - even for work in progress. Really need to get this sorted out!

I wouldn't worry too much about anti static. Just life the case and take out the ram and insert it fully again. It should be quite simple.

Ram

From everything you're reporting it looks to me like the RAM is the issue.

Have you tried running with just one DIMM to start and use process of elimination to see if you have one or more bad RAM chips?

Also look here: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202892

Are the RAM DIMMs all identical and are identified as UDIMMs?

OK now this is getting really weird. Was checking the system specs on this mac and it was reporting 24GB of Ram installed when I have 32 GB of Ram installed (4 x 8GB Kingston chips). I have visually inspected all 4 chips are in place. Restarted and it reports 32GB of Ram again!!

You almost certainly have a RAM fault. First as suggested, reseat what you have in there. Second, if that does not mitigate the panic, reinstall the factory RAM and see if it's better.

The Ram Dimms were all fitted by the original supplier Jigsaw systems who has so far been so useless in resolving this problem. I did spec Kingston Ram - which I will now have to check that they've installed. There is no factory Ram since this was all replaced and upgraded to bump it to 32GB

Ugh. In that case, troubleshoot by testing each DIMM individually. Also, the poster who suggested not to worry about static electricity is in error. You should be able to find an inexpensive antistatic wristband without too much difficulty.

I have just completed a full erase and install of the system - upon booting before installing any other software the system was only reporting 24GB of Ram - 3 8GB Dimms instead of the 4 installed.

I then installed Cinema 4D to test when rendering and so far it has rendered the last 55 minutes without a problem (only registering the 3 Dimms)

Next step is to restart and try to get it to register the full 32GB of Ram again, hit render and see if it fails after usually around 40 minutes when I think the Ram Dimm falls offline - if that is the problem come monday I want the vendor to replace all 4 Dimms since they were all installed at the same time and I can't afford to just replace the faulty one and hope the rest are ok - I don't want to fall victim to a bad batch!

You'll spend a lot less time testing one by one. It's most likely that the one that does not register is the failed one, however. I would put that one in by itself to start testing.

House is heated regularly throughout the day, but I don't know anyone who can afford to run it 24/7 - besides the computer is spec'd to run at this ambient temperature so it's not really the point - it's not dripping with water at all, but shutting it up with silica gel to extract moisture solves the problem so it must be condensation of some form

Everyone should run their heat 24x7...maybe turn it down a little when out of the house (~68) but NEVER turn it off. I think it's illegal to leave house heat/AC off according to city ordinance.

Since as previously stated I am in England this really doesn't apply, and considering the immense cost of heating bills in this country, if there was an ordinance forcing people to run their heat 24/7 I think there would probably be riots in the streets!

The faulty ram dimm does appear to break down as the machine heats up under heavy rendering load - having tried it in rooms with different ambient temperatures, the warmer room actually caused the failure sooner!
