Checking who updated to Big Sur with their Mac Pro 7,1 and wanting to know the performance gain from this OS versus Catalina.

Any pros and cons? Are you using it for specific tasks/workflow like video editing, illustration, photo, sound design?

Have heard early reports of GPU issues with hardware acceleration, specifically related to H264 and AMD 5XXX, not MP7,1 specific. Troubleshooting headache from colleagues. I'm not even thinking about messing with this for several weeks.

Mine worked as expected. However, it took forever... Like an hour+

If it looks like its doing nothing just let it sit. All my programs seem to be working fine though.

I downloaded it late last night and woke up this morning to the new OS. Everything has been rock solid the entire day I've been using it.

I have the Vega II and no issues with it as well.

Would appreciate some feedback from people using 2xRadeon VII in the 7,1.
Will Big Sur handle them the same way as Catalina?
I can live with the "sleep mode issue", but otherwise?

With Big Sur are you still able to download the full installer and then simply cancel the installation prompt and move the file after completion?

This is how I usually keep my OS installers around and access to versions in the app store but I haven't done this with anything newer than Mojave. Hope it's not been changed to some online-only installer or the like?

Still works. That’s what I did to create a usb installer.

Dows anyone know if the OWC Accelsior is working ok in a Mac Pro running big sur?

The OWC Accelsior and other PCIe cards that don't require drivers should work right off the bat. And with M1 chips supporting PCIe 4, then there is no reason to think PCIe 3 has been crippled on older systems as both are inter-compatible.

Took the plunge. Made a partition on the Apple SSD and gave it 1TB for Big Sur. Left all my peripherals connected during the update - internal PCIe cards and external peripherals via a Thunderbolt 3 dock.

Zero hiccup during the update. Just a lot of waiting.

Third-party apps that I have installed are running fine:

Adobe
- Premiere Pro
- After Effects
- Media Encoder

Drive DX

iStatistica Pro

Mosaic

Carbon Copy Cloner

iCue

Microsoft 360
- Outlook
- OneNote
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Teams

Zoom

Even Steam software and playing CSGO worked better in Big Sur than in Catalina. I don't have to boot in Bootcamp to play that game for optimal performance. :)

For a major OS change, this is the most seamless I've experienced with major apps running fine, if not better.

I see Drive DX mentioned above. It had a little hiccup - I don't know if it is Big Sur related or just the same for Catalina, but since it happened with Big Sur I thought I'd mention it.

Drive DX has an update to 1.10.1, so I clicked on the update button. The result, after its download, was an error - I don't recall the verbiage, but the word "error" was in there, and the software didn't update.

So I erased the old Drive DX app, downloaded the new one directly from the web site and installed it - which was just copying it to my Utility folder where I keep such things.

I can report that it seems to run OK after that "around the elbow" installation.

I did write the software publisher a note to the above effect.

I didn’t experience any hiccup with DriveDx. I did download the latest from scratch before Big Sur.

Here‘s from their website:

macOS 11 Big Sur support
  • macOS 11 Big Sur will be supported,
  • We are not providing official support for Beta-versions of macOS.

Leon,

Perhaps my note wasn't entirely clear.

I updated to Big Sur.

I tried afterward to update Drive DX.

The Drive DX update failed when I tried to update from within Drive DX.

So I downloaded the update and installed it. It works fine - the Drive DX update function from within their app was what didn't didn't work for me.

I just installed Big Sur with 2x Radeon VII. Installation went very smoothly, took about 45 mins. Everything seems to be working normally. No drama.

I installed Big Sur the day after release. I've so far used Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop extensively (as well as the usual day-to-day stuff) and have yet to run into any issues at all. I do not notice any performance improvements on any of the Adobe products, but I also wasn't expecting or looking for any — though they are definitely not running slower than they were. So that's a win in itself. So far, so good.

No issues with my 4TB Accelsior whatsoever. No issues with anything actually. Install was uneventful.

I experienced two kernel panics where the computer just stopped and restarted. I never experienced any kernel panic or restart in Catalina.

It appears both were coming from waking from asleep. However I can't tell for sure if it's Big Sur or the program that's running in the background - specifically Drive Dx, Mosaic, and iStatistica Pro.

If I get another kernel panic, I'll shut down all three first and go from there.

If anyone knows how to interpret the error, I'm putting it out here just in case:
