[doublepost=1531077567][/doublepost]You two have been a big help, thanks.

Could I trouble you with one last question, I have a 2008 3.2ghz quad core, 26MB memory and the Nvidia original video card.

I can't decide wether to upgrade the memory to 64 and add a SSD or go for a 4.1 or 5.1 machine.

The reason is because I have a new MacBook pro and the two can't swap some files due to the High Sierra OS.

Any thoughts?
IMHO, if you can easily and cost effectively find a MP4,1 (2009), go for it without doubt. Upgrade the firmware to 5,1 and you have a officially supported Mac on High Sierra.

If you can't find one immediately, you can buy the SSD/GPU and search for a Mac Pro 2009 without rush. You can reuse your new SSD/GPU when you find one, but the FB-DIMM memory you can't. So, keep your memory as is.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but you have/want to buy a 2009 or a 2010/2012?

You can't mismatch the trays, 2009 and 2010/12 trays are not interchangeable, SMC mismatch version. Since SMC from the tray can't talk to SMC from the logic board, no Fan control app works and the fans go full RPM full time. No one knows how to update the SMC on 4,1 tray/logic board (1.39f5) to the same on a real 5,1 Mac Pro (1.39f11).

You have to buy a real 2009 tray if you have a 2009, 2010/2012 tray to a 2010/2012 Mac Pro.

If you have a single processor Mac Pro you can buy the dual processor tray and change it. 2009 tray on 2009, 2010/2012 tray on 2010/2012
