ok thanks friend take your advice.

I haven't been updated with recent part info & prices, nor any recent benchmarks.

My friend asks me (please help me to answer her) :

"Somebody offers me a Hackintosh Machine - an 'HP XW6600 Dual Xeon, 8GB RAM, 320GB HDD', which said is equivalent to a '2008 MacPro' for just about $300.
Is it worth it (for Music DAW) ?
AND
if it's not, how (what basic parts specs) most powerful of a new 'hackintosh-able' system I can buy with only $300? Much less powerful right?"

Thank You in advance

Well, a genuine 2008 Mac Pro doesn't cost much more than that, so I wouldn't even think about buying a pre-Hackintosh'ed machine where I don't know if it has been properly done and if it's running stable.

When talking about new hardware, I wouldn't go below a entry level quad core i5 processor. A complete build with at least half-decent components should start around $450-$500.

That is an absolutely terrible deal, do not pay $300 for a xw6600. You can literally get more powerful machines than the 2013 Mac Pro for ~$300 if you shop around a bit. As I posted elsewhere, there was recently an ebay firesale on e5-1660 workstations; 16gb ram; usb 3.0; etc. for just $350 shipped. And that is very easily hackintoshable. Multi-core benchmarks even beat the newest iMac. So no, you don't have to settle for much less powerful. You can get more powerful than just about every mac for $300-400 at the right time.

Thanks MacStu09 (and other repliers)..
but;

#..."You can literally get more powerful machines than the 2013 Mac Pro for ~$300 if you shop around a bit"... <--- Wow, are you sure? I hope you're right, very interesting, please explain me more about this.

#I can't find any item ($350 e5-1660 workstations) you mentioned in ebay.
Can you please help with the link(s)?

Thanks

I'm positive, I own one myself, and some of them even sold for $250 during the firesale. (They're sold out now.)

For reference, base Mac Pro 2013's benchmark around 3,200-3,600 & 15,000-17,000 on geekbench 4. The e5-1660 machines I referenced benchmark 3,500-3,800 & 17,000-20,000.

And you may not find any right at the moment - I do see some for $450 right now. But that's why I mentioned, "at the right time." You may have to keep watching for a few weeks until the good deals come up, but eventually, they will show up. Once you get one, drop in something inexpensive like a 1060 6gb, and you'll be very, very happy all for ~$350-450.

someone would know to give me a link on ebay to buy a mac-pro 2008 that is at par like performance of an I7 4790 ?? naturally with prices lower than 700 euros?
thank you
