The Mac Pro 3,1 is arguably the greatest Mac Pro that Apple made when it came to price. Such a solid-ass machine. Bought new, lasted me 8 years before I decided to go to a 5,1.

And a 5,1 was a big difference. Do not buy a 3,1 now. They're really not worth much anymore. I got $280 for mine about a month ago and I was lucky to get that, and included original box, etc. I did a BTO and got a 8800GT right off the bat (and the wireless card, which wasn't standard), but then I upgraded to a 4870 which was a better card. Sold that with the Mac Pro.

Don't get unless you don't care about power and want a secondary "Aux" computer.

I have a 2.8 eight core 3,1, and have had it for around 6 years now, love it! It has the ATI 2600 graphics card, and I installed 32GB of memory last year, along with a 512GB SSD on an OWC Excelsior PCI card. To this day, it feel respectably quick and powerful, though my late 2013 MBP benchmarks at around double the speed. The 3,1 benchmarked at 1908, 10417 this morn.

The question I have though, is if I do the hacks to install Sierra, will it give me much more speed? I'm considering buying a 5,1 12 core as I'm I'm sure it'll keep feeling fast for years to come...
