Howzit bladerunner & socket, progress! I've re-installed the web-drivers and it recognise the 960 card if I start it with the old 8800tg.
I can swap the HDMI to the 960 whilst the machine is on, and all is well, it works, but the moment I try to re-start the Mac without the old 8800gt in the mac, the screen, stays blank. It only works if I keep the old card in the machine.

I've read somewhere you have to go into the terminal and do something for the machine to recognise the new card, but I cant seem to find it. But at least I am making progress. But I am not too sure.

no, the terminal was used in the past, but with new drivers (like yours) you must only activate the driver in the system preference/nvidia driver manager panel

Ok i tried others benchmark (heaven) and the new card is 2x faster!

I also received the Dell p2715q, connected via displayport on the card and minidisplayport on the monitor. All works fine but if i set the high resolutions, texts and windows becomes very little! I haven't the option for retina displays for setting texts dimension, it's possibile to activate it?

bladerunner...can you help me with this question, please?

maybe the cable is wrong, try with another one, or change port...you have not a displayport?

Got 3 different cables, tried all of them, changed the socket, tried with DVI, hdmi, but it wont start, but I am running it now on the new card, but I have to first start with the old one, for the system to recognise it.
FWIW, I've started in safe mode and under "About this Mac", Graphics, the system displayed, "no kext".

Yes, I have. But still the same issue.
Hi all, so I made further progress. I wiped my SSD and did a clean install of Yosemite, then the webdrivers, and the card is working. So, thanks for the help. Must have been some legacy drivers that stuffed it up. I just installed Grid 2, I get about 40fps on the ULTRA settings. Not too shabby. Glad its working at least.

You really need to make a secondary partition and run windows for gaming. 40FPS for a game like Grid isn't very good.

I guess. But considering that this game wouldn't even open with the 8800gt, to playing it in Ultra is great, at least for me. I'm also playing Tomb Raider on 64fps. And Dirt 50fps. All on highest settings, with no issues. I will definitely install Windows 10 on it sometime, can't wait to play a few games on it.

BTW what processors would you recommend for the 3.1 Mac Pro, to try and eliminate the bottleneck?

you can overlock 2008 cpu by about 10% easily with setfsb windows utility (costs 10$ iirc).

overclock persists over reboot (not over shutdown).

I'm using that util to overclock 2.8 ghz cpu to 3.1 ghz, then reboot (to fix windows time measurements). Helps a bit to play current games.

Yeah, it'll be fine. For video editing, your CPUs are a lot more important.

Hi Bladerunner
I'm thinking to upgrade CPU's in my mac pro 2009, I'm oriented for a pair of X5675, what do you think?

I'm learning some tutorials and I ask you if you did it on your mac?
tks

Excellent price tag on those, as they go for around $100-150 USD where as the x5690s sell for around $250-300 but only perform about 15% better. Probably the best bang for the buck money can get you in a mac pro.

have you tried to install a new cpu on mac pro 2009? how you did it?
removing the cpu cap, or inserting 2mm thick?

No, but I imagine it'd be pretty easy. Remove the mobo, unscrew the heat sinks, remove the old cpus, insert new ones, wipe down with isopropanol, apply thermal paste, put everything back together.

Although, I can say that this will be a scary procedure for some people.

some sellers of kits for this on ebay de-lid them first is that necessary?

There are exactly 1,000,000 threads on this, with pictures. The info hasn't changed at all. Dual Socket 4,1 is only one with worries.

Many guides with photos if you search. Rather then expect one single person to have "the right answer" you have something better, the combined experience of many people who tried it different ways. Exalt in the glory of the internet. I just finished a car repair that was 1,000,000 times easier because I could read what 20 different people had done in same spot. Formulated a plan and got the result. 20 years ago same repair via blurry black and white photos in a Haynes manual would have been much more involved, expensive, and likely to fail.

Even Anandtech has written about this upgrade.

Hi!
I'm Davide from Italy and I have a question for upgrade my Mac Pro 4,1 with the new MSI GTX 960.
Someone can help me about the compatibility of this card with my Mac Pro ?
If I use this card with the SamsungU28D590 4K monitor i think that I have a 60Hz freq refresh with the 1.2 DisplayPort.

Thanks for everyone that will help me. :)

Bye

Ciao Davide,

Comunque ti consiglio l'upgrade!
