My machine is indeed a 4,1 > 5,1 -- I believe gatd is using a true 5,1

I am running 10.12.6 still, build 16G11114. The Spectre Meltdown patch timing would be about right for my issues (first week of January), but a little late for gatd's issues starting in early December.

Perhaps it is time to upgrade to High Sierra and see if that fixes anything. I did download the installer and reflash my firmware with it's update a few days ago, but I never got around to actually installing the OS.

Also, it does pass the short hardware test, I did not have time to babysit it through the long hardware test last night.

This was my experience as well when swapping processor boards between computers, though I do not discount that both (presumably) 8 y/o power supplies may not be working up to snuff at this point.
[doublepost=1516139601][/doublepost]I think my goal this evening will be to run iStat and watch current draw with and without fans running full blast and processor's fully loaded (to the point that the computer restarts). If the draw is higher with the fans and processors fully loaded, that may give an indication that the power supply is not the culprit. Maybe installing 10.13 is in order as well (for what that is worth)
