I went ahead and ordered a Crucial M4 256GB SSD, and it should be here and installed on Friday. I have been prepping for the switch ahead of time, since I've not used an SSD before. Got my firmware #309 update boot CD burned in case it's not done already, and once it's updated and formatted HFS+, I'll use SuperDuper! to clone my current boot drive over to it.

I hope it's as amazing as I have heard about, without any of the headaches I've also heard about! :p

oh it is! i load photoshop cs5 in about 3 seconds!

Got the Crucial M4 256GB installed, firmware updated to 309, and set up as boot drive.

I can tell things are faster, but it doesn't blow me away. Photoshop CS5 loads in 1.8 seconds, but After Effects CS5 still takes 11.6 seconds after loading all the filters and such. Booting up is faster, but not instant or anything like that.

One strange thing so far is that the two times I've booted up so far, some odd program will be launched. First time it was Dreamweaver, and the second time it launched Preview with the Vimeo logo and something else. Seems strange to launch random junk like that.

I'll re-evaluate as time goes on, but for now, I'm not sold that SSDs are worth the money just yet. I'm trying it without TRIM for now. If things go downhill, I'll look at activating it.

Surfing the web seems much faster. Click something, and pages are completely loaded one second later.

Well, figured out that iBooks Author was what was auto-launching finder windows for no reason out of the blue after the SSD install. (WTF?) I only installed it because I could, not because I wanted it, so I nuked it, and all is normal now. Maybe there are some good reasons they don't want you to have it on Snow Leopard, haha!

Anyway, thought I'd update you all. Carry on.

PS. Just saw Safe House. Wow, excellent movie!

Just a note that, as far as taping SSDs together, they will get very hot when writing large files.

Many of the SSD geek sites are reporting durability issues with drives that use the SandForce controller. Lightning fast for sure, but otherwise disappointing and high maintenance.

You will see more SSD drives fail quickly or within a few weeks than rotational drives. Its just the nature of the memory chips and controllers. Its not unusual to see 20% failure rates for some sandforce controller models like OCZ. But the drive vendors are quick to replace failed drives. Intel brand drives seem to be the least troublesome.

Some drives do not need trim as much as others as their firmware has more efficient garbage collecting features.

Can you make me one?

Or build one if you have the means.

its dead simple and requires very little material

rotarypower101, I really love the way yours looks/mounts. This is exactly what I'm looking for. Looks simple enough, but I don't have access to the proper tools. Think you could make me one? Would pay a fair price.
