Well here's a pic at least..I'd be willing to bet the new Retina displays will be black.

Random remark: Should have made holes on top of the desk for those psu cords. Looks terrible that way!

Let's call it the New Pro, NPro or nmpro or nmp.

I'm all for cMP and MPc confusion. One for classic, the other for cylinder - I let you figure out which is which. ;) This or the iCan.

I'm still not sold on the surface though. Would have preferred plain ol' brushed aluminium.

why are tv cheaper? What is the difference between 4k LED screen and 4k LED Tv?
I'm a bit confused about that

Currently the biggest cause of the difference is economies of scale. There is little interest and little demand in 4K panels for monitors versus TVs. The more panels sold, the cheaper they will get and more panel manufacturers will jump onto to the bandwagon, further reducing prices. This is starting to happen in the TV world and hence why 4K TVs are now becoming reasonably priced in comparison to a year ago. I expect the same thing to happen in the monitor market when demand picks up.

For the high end of mass market home use I suspect it would help if most streaming wasn't highly compressed.

Yea, the TV's are cheaper as always..

I think we're 4 years from $2k 4k displays
4 Years is to long estimate, Asus launched a 4k monitor with the same panel as the Sharp monitor, the Sharp is 5500USD, the Asus is "just" 3800USD, there will definitely be 2XXX USD monitors in 2014, by the end of 2014, maybe under 2000 USD, if not from the big players like Samsung, Sharp or LG, some "generic" brand will take care of that.

4K Monitors went from 5 figures to 3800USD in less than 2 years. And now when there is even more and more demands for 4k displays, the price will dropp even faster.

What is the difference between 4k LED screen and 4k LED Tv?
I dont know about any 4k LED screens that is less than fotball stadium sized display, a true LED screen is made out of individual Light Emitting Diods, they cant be produced in small sizes so most of them is atlest like 5 feet wide.

LED TV on the other hand is just a regular LCD screen with light produced from a single och dual LED sources instead of CCFL.

Unfortunately there is a huge misconception about LED TVs, people think it is a completely new technology but no, its the same good old LCD matrix.

The LCD with LED backlight diversion that you have taken is a bit pointless. The key part of his question was the 4K resolution.

Thankfully the silly 3D distraction is now falling out of favour and display tech is moving forward again, as opposed to sideways.

For the high end of mass market home use I suspect it would help if most streaming wasn't highly compressed.

The problem with that is the current trend of bandwidth restrictions. I am not sure what the situation is like in the US, but it is certainly becoming a reality in Europe.

Still, it all makes sense when you see this in action

Ok, i have never heard anyone say "LED screen" and mean something else than a screen where the actual LED:s are the pixels so i just assumed he asked for that difference.

Oh well :p

I like to be pedantic too, but 99% of normal people that use the words LED screen in everyday conversation mean, "LCD screen with LED backlighting".

ok, here is my confusion. You keep talking about 4k being about $5k but in that case what is the difference (except size) between geting 4k monitor like this :
http://www.amazon.com/IBM-T221-22-2...qid=1371132617&sr=1-1&keywords=4k+led+monitor

or 4k tv like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE50UY04-50-Inch-120Hz/dp/B00BXF7I9M

If we take the size aside and assume that both are the same size then do you get identical result (ie, you can use the tv as your main monitor without issues?)

You possibly can. But there will be tradeoffs I am sure. Lack of Displayport ( which makes it pointless for the MPC )

Colour on the pro monitors are normally way better and true - which is the point they are reference monitors.

refresh rates and Motion blur etc too. But as you say I bet this would be fine for day to day work.

Someone said they returned it as they had shocking refresh rates for games.

Did you not read my post about economies of scale?

yes i did but that didn't tell me the difference except the price. I was wondering about this:
if I have tv screen which is 4k and then monitor screen which is 4k and they are both the same size then can i expect pretty much the same thing? Or monitors have way better refresh rate and that is why one should stick to monitor?

I'm not asking to buy one - in fact i think its pretty pointless at this point and I'm sure that Apple will be pushing retina everywhere until it becomes new standard. I have rMBP and I wish to have all screen like that as its so nice on the eyes.
Its just matter of time i guess :)
However, I suspect that the new mac pro might come out with an updated screen as why else would they put dual gpu's and advertising 4k screen if they didn't update anything from their site. In fact, they could do Thunderbolt display that is retina also, don't you think?

Hey everyone - just so you all know - the video called, "Painting the Future" is now up at the Apple Developer Video page for free if you have a developer account (which is also free to sign up for). Or, we'll be summarizing the video shortly on our original post that discussed the event here - http://www.pixarpost.com/2013/06/pixar-to-conduct-special-lunchtime.html.

Again, the video is a demo of the Mari software as developed by The Foundry. Pixar demonstrates the power of the new Mac Pro by putting it through the ringer with their character animation. (More details are included in our first post on page one of this thread).

Hope this helps!
