And if anyone wants to purchase a Seagate Barracuda 1T instead of a Velociraptor, Newegg has them for $59 + free shipping.
I just picked one up for my TM backup.

They are also now almost completely obsolete as the 1TB single platter Barracudas perform almost identically and yet don't need any special anything. Actually so do the 2TB and 3TB Barracudas - so that's actually better. So velociraptor users: Eat your hearts out!

And if you were to shop around I think you can find them for about $10 or $15 less than that too. Hehehe...

Any links? I'll buy another!
If you want speed from a drive, just get an SSD instead of a Velociraptor.
Get a 256GB SSD for the OS and a 2TB Seagate Barracuda for storage.
I agree but I actually like the idea of SSHD drives in place of the SSD. The 750GB version from Seagate uses a 7400RPM spindle and the NAND takes care of the OS and app speeds very nicely. It's a much cheaper option too I think coming in at about $150 for that 750GB.![]()
If you want something inexpensive, go with a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD and a Seagate 1TB Barracuda HDD. 128GB should be more than enough space for OS X and any apps you use.
The SSD can be had for $139 and the HDD can be had for $72. Both are shipped free from Amazon. For an extra $28 you can step up to a 2TB Seagate HDD.
This is $211 or $239, but you are getting a FAR better setup than some hybrid setup. Just my opinion.
Sure, we'er all just opinionating here.
In my case however, that wouldn't work. I would need a 512GB model minimum. My system floats at around 300 to 400 GB and I don't keep any data (music, videos, images, etc.) or downloads on my system drive. It built up to that size about 2 months after purchasing the MacPro1,1 new and it has been hovering around there ever since. This is me after just recently deleting some 30GB of caches and deciding to move about 140GB of games over to a different RAID partition:
That's what the 2TB drive is for.
Put JUST the OS and applications on the SSD. Everything else goes on the 2TB drive.
On my MBA, I have a 256GB SSD partitioned into 2 128GB partitions. With Mountain Lion and my applications, I only take up ~23GB. I cannot see someone having 300GB worth of applications installed.
