I reached out to the head of benefits and compensation at my work today, to propose that they partner with a salary sacrifice partner for buying apple and other tech products. We already do salary sacrifice for cycle to work, so it would give a lot of geeks a great way to spread the cost of a kickass system.

I'll wait a few weeks and see if they take the bait on that before I make my mind up.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what "salary sacrifice partner" means, and after a web search for the term I'm even more confused.

Can you put it in international terms?

Woops, sorry about that.
Salary sacrifice is a UK scheme whereby you can purchase an item and pay for it directly from your pre-tax income on a monthly basis. It's not 100% tax free, you only wind up saving around 12% overall, but the payments are spread and there's no credit check like there would be with a loan.

Here is the provider I was proposing:

Well I went and did it.
Just pulled the trigger
Quad core
12GB ram
512GB ssd

Due to the SSD upgrade the purchase is classed as custom, so will take 5-7 working days before it will be dispatched.

Due to be with me 7th Jan.
I'm based in Northern Ireland and they have a warehouse in the south, so if I'm lucky I might see it a day or two early (perhaps)

If you want a Mac Pro with some future proofing your choices are either a 5,1 or at least the six core 6,1.

Geez, you really like those older units. I have a 1,1 ... want to buy it? haha

I'm wanting, like the original poster, a new Mac Pro, but i want a 5k capable updated one, with an apple monitor.

Hoping it won't be too long a wait and it comes early 2015, with the new USB 3 and thunderbolt systems.

The new ports are months away. Unless Apple has an early bird deal with Intel.

It's a 2013 computer, and it's almost 2015. Aren't a lot of parts outdated by now? For one, it has DDR3 RAM, and DDR4 is available. And surely some new 5K support is on the way.

egh, you should have just went with the iMac retina.
The quad core Mac Pro is weak sauce unless you need the ECC RAM or Workstation grade GPU.

I already had a 4k monitor which I was connecting my MBP to in clamshell mode and I liked the idea of having the computer separate.
It's also somewhat upgradeable, I'll probably bump up the ram in 2015, possibly other parts later on
