Hi telopereira,

Thanks for this thread and your final conclusions from this June. I also have a Mac Pro early 2008, and exactly those problems you've described occurred about two years later after purchase.

After an authorized dealer here in Rio replaced the motherboard and the power supply, the Mac worked fine, until recently, the problem occurred again (sudden shut-down, restart, etc.). So we (my technician that is) replaced the power supply (again), as he thought everything else is ok. The Mac ran for two days without troubles, then he returned to "shut-down mode" again.

So your insight that it's a problem with the voltage regulator on the logic board may help us to fix this problem. And I can confirm that older models are much more reliable. I have a Power Mac G5 I bought somewhere around 2005 or 2006 that is running since then without any hassle. Unfortunately, G5 Macs do not meet today's standards any more concerning applications, speed and performance.

I will let my technician know. Thanks again.

Michael

It's really annoying when people resurrect these ancient threads. At least this time I noticed right away. I hate reading for 10 min and then figuring out it's a post from 1902. :p

I am glad this solved your problem though.

Same thing

Hey Telopereira,
I guess you are from Brazil too.
I have a Mac Pro 3.1 (Early 2008) and I'm having the exact same problems.

I also did everything possible in terms of tests, resets, clean-ups, battery change, replacement of Power Unit, and after 2 days it went back to do the same thing.

The funny thing is that I had it in the U.S. for 5 years before I came back to Brasil without a problem, but few months in Brazil and it started happening.

Maybe is the quality of the energy in Brazil? Maybe the Mac Pro's don't do well here?

Did you ever got it working again?
