Geez, just buy AppleCare off of eBay for less than $100. Not reason to buy directly from Apple unless you want to spend more. I got mine for $85. And yes, a good piece of mind for my machine that was nearly $7k.

This discussion has turned into a flamefest on prior occasions, but buying Applecare on Ebay is very much YMMV.

Anyone considering doing so should at least spend some Google time on the issue.

I'm slow to respond to threads like these, and I'm well aware that there are plenty of other responses, but I'm still going to coin in anyways.

Yes, I have considered getting a new Mac Pro rather than other Apple computers, simply because it's Xeon based. I wouldn't go all full-out and buy a Mac Pro with a 12 core processor and 64GB of RAM, but if I had the money, I would. I wouldn't need that kind of hardware though. It's the same thing with the HP Z820 - insanely powerful and hardware I wouldn't need anytime soon, but if I had the money, I'm stupid enough to buy it.

If I did have enough money and was more sensible, I'd buy a base model Mac Pro. I could use the optimized applications well, and I'd dual boot it with Windows so I could play my games on it. I think it's a better deal than other Windows workstations out there.

I am a Fine Art Photographer and got a nMacPro

It is in fact a work of art itself. Whisper quiet and fast as hell.

I use all CalDigit VR & T series USB3 & Thunderbolt drives. These externals are the best out there hot swappable RAID boxes that put out a whopping 17db of noise. hardly notice em.:D

Use PS CS6 CC and LR5 CC. Do the occasional may 3D and Video work. Mine is the 4 core and nothing comes close to slowing it down or heating it up. Image files 1-5GB each.

Love it, love it , LOVE IT!:D

I am looking to replace my 08, which is staring to boot really slowly and randomly crash.

I am not a pro by any stretch, but I'd like something with a little more flexibility than an iMac. Also, I worry that an iMac will not be useful as long as a macpro will. Plus, someday I dream about a 4k monitor....

However, the one I just built is $5400! Ouch! Not sure how I'll be able to explain that to the wife.

The 08 is the one you speak of @ $5400? That's $5400 without an SSD as a boot disk? Or a video card that handles 4K? Those two items may buy you more 08 time if like items are not already in it!

No, the $5400 is the nMP.

I could certainly add a ssd to the 08. Will think about it.
