Hello to all my friends, I just signed up and immediately ask for an advice to you experts.
I want to buy on ebay a MacPro 2008-8 core x 700 euro, I do not have money to get a new one, especially I need to do editing with FCPX or cc premiere in HD, knowing that the HD and heavy but by encoding video files to avchd in apple ProRes 422 hd, and putting 32 gb of RAM on the MacPro, maybe changing the video card, and put a 240 gb SSD, do you think that it works well ??

I know that the ideal would be a MacPro 2009 by as I read on the forum, but the cost is too high for me, a 2008 costs much less.
So I ask if the 2008 8-core MacPro in question is enough to make editing in HD, I do not pretend to be as powerful as a I7 4770 K but at least as close to the middle as power.

I mean for example if a I7 4770 K has the power of 10 points in what would be the power of the MacPro 8 core 2008? get at least 7 points?

The memory for a 2008 MP is MUCH more expensive than that for a 2009 MP.

Check how much the upgrade for your desired RAM would be before you buy the 2008 MP.
 
I agree with above, a 2009 model would be a smarter buy as you can also change the firmware to become a 2010-12 model. The single processor versions are also quite cheap to upgrade to a hex core.

As said, the ram is a lot cheaper.
 
Cheaper now, but wasting your money when it is out of date sooner. AND, you'll spend all that money on SSD and GPU (which options are more limited) anyway.

If you really want to edit now and don't want to spend that much money, you are better off with a high spec iMac, to be honest.
 
as of now, 32 gigs of mp3,1 ram would cost you around 400$

graphics cards selection is same as for other macpros.
 
2008 is sufficient for HD video editing on a quite decent level.
If you are tight on money, you can get such one and 32GB of 667MHz RAM for ~ 600 EUR.
You will still need the GPU (7950 about 140 EUR + shipping) and storage (2x 2TB WD Black ~200 EUR + shipping).
Optionally the SSD (~100 EUR + shipping for MX100 256GB).

Total is ~1100 EUR including shipping.

P.S. I'm not affiliated with sellers, links are just for reference.

Thank you all for the answers, so smart as I though it would be buying a MacPro in 2009 to what you say.
Because there are more opportunities to expand and strengthen it, I got it right?
I spend more now but I will have more power in the end.
But what I do not understand, and how can xhe a 4 core 2009 is more powerful than an 8 core 2008 ??

thanks again, an imac I do not like, I'm forced to take a MacPro.
Also I am not a professional video, so I will not have a monster as the new MacPro 12-core !!!!!!!!!!!
I just have a MacPro 2008, but that work without many problems maybe HD files converted to ProRes and just.
 
WOW 700 Euro's for a 2008, I didn't know they were still fetching that kind of money.

To be honest with you though, that's overpriced, I wasn't a massive fan of the 2008 version I messed around with, the 2009 and 2010 models were a HUGE improvement.

Sorry to sound like I'm pimping a sale but I'm thinking about selling my 2010 4 core if you're interested, I can ship to Italy, but it will be more than 700 Euro's unfortunately (Let me know if you're interested).

As it stands I don't have a graphics card, but I can get one for it with no problem.

For what I do now days (Download, some printing, watch movies, listen to music) I'm planning to get one of the newer Mac Mini's, so I'm kinda downsizing.
 
Is that DDR2 ram really that expensive? I loaded up my 1,1 with it (24GB) for under $100 US from ebay.

Maybe I'm out on the pricing, but I wouldn't pay more than £350 for a 2008 and if I needed the power I'd just pay more for a 2009 or 2010.

My Mac Pro (2010) as alot more going for it compared to the 2008, like it's easy to drop in a 6 core Westmere CPU or even in the future drop in Dual CPU board and have 2 6 core Westmere CPU's

That 2008 doesn't have a great graphics card either, you could do with an ATI 1GB 5770 at least, which I can get for £80 shipped, or you could even drop in a flashed 7850 for another £100 ontop for 4K resolution.

Also SSD Hard Drives are a great purchase, I have some professional SSD brackets in mine, so it's all setup for 4 SSD drives, you can actually add another 2 in the optical drive bay.

I guess it depends on your budget though, either way maybe it would be worth saving up for a 2009 or 2010, that's what I would do anyway.

I'm looking to get about £900 for my Mac Pro (without graphics card), but I'm willing to take a deposit if you're interested and I can get you fully setup with what you want).

I purchased mine direct from Apple just over a year ago.
 
hanks friend but we are far beyond my budget.

I have to stay below 700 euro per hour and then calmly I can change the tab and add RAM and SSD drives.

Nope, not slowly. I meant all upgrades together.

This is an option only when you have a limited budget and you're in a desperate need of quite powerful machine. This way you can make some money with it (assuming that you do this FCP editing for a life, not hobbyistic), next re-sell it in a few months without a lose. GPU, HDDs and SSD may be transferred to next MP (except trash can ofc).

If you're planning to upgrade the machine slowly, definitely get the 2009/2010.

There's still CPU upgrades you can do to either model you go for, some cheap, some expensive.

Graphics cards you were offered would probably benefit to an upgrade too, like maybe a 5770?

I'd also advise in some kind of SSD, even if you just use a small drive for OS and Applications.
 
thanks again, but looking at this news that I found on the net I understand that in a I7 4770 K and an Intel xeon 5650 (MacPro 2008) and the difference is not much, so the power is almost the same, or mistake ???

You can't get X5650 versions on the 2008.

They're all different architectures when the models go up, i.e newer faster versions all around.
 
I don't know about the prices in Italy, but in the UK my 2008 2.8ghz/12GB Ram/8800GT 512MB just sold for £500. I tried to sell it for more for around4-6 weeks, but no one wanted it - there are so many available.

On the other hand, i managed to get a 'cheap' 2.66GHz 2009 quad (just £520 in as-new condition) and upgraded that for a few hundred pounds (£200 for 24GB ECC Ram, £200 for 6-core 3.46GHz CPU).

It's much faster and definitely the way forward - even if you can't afford to upgrade right away the 2.66GHz 2009 had the same multi-core performance in Logic X (my main use for it), and much faster single core performance, so you're much better off with a 2009.
 
mah ... prices are all that I have looked on ebay and the MacPro 2009, all from the United Kingdom GB and no one from Italy, but still high prices.

maybe it's better to take a hackintosh always on ebay from spain with i7 4770 K and a 16 GB SSD 120 gb, which are a bomb and only cost about 900 euro.

or mistake ??

We gave you advice

If you want to go Hackintosh, you might as well build your own. You'll need to be up on keeping drivers up to date, making sure not to break a functioning machine with the wrong update, etc, but you can get the power for less money.

Or, you can just buy a 2009 MP and start there. There is one in UK on sale in the marketplace now that just dropped in price to about £950, you can probably get one for even less if you are patient
 
Thank you for answer, but a MacPro 2009 would cost much more to buy it from and modify it to increase the power that in the end will always be lower than a hackintosh like the one linked.
In addition, a new hackintosh I7 4790 K and much higher power as compared to a MacPro 2009 obsolete and that you can not boost more than time.
Not even a MacPro 2010 and as powerful as a hackintosh that I linked myself, do you agree?
