About a month ago my local MicroCenter randomly had an open box base Studio 14c/32c/36g/512g for $1,699 before tax. They hadn't had any new in stock for a few weeks. I paced the store for nearly an hour an had almost convinced myself to wait for an M5 and there was no way this RAM/Storage thing would get that bad... Any hint of buyer remorse is gone now.

Oh goodness the m3 ultra model I just got last week with full spec available to me has gone from 13k AUD to 21k AUD. this will be one occasion where I’m super happy I ordered a ‘previous gen”!

If there is an M5 Max and Ultra Mac Studio, I really hope that they ship with 1TB and 2TB at the base configuration, respectively. I have already thrown my lot in with a 14" M5 Pro MacBook Pro as my M2 Max Studio replacement, but if I had waited and was looking at $2700 for an M5 Max with 1TB... 😱

I have a feeling that the current production run of M5 family SoCs is being completely absorbed by the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, leaving none available for a Mac mini or Mac Studio.
Yes, Apple could order more M5 family SoCs from TSMC, but they also do not have enough A19 family SoCs for the iPhone. So if they're going to allocate wafer capacity, they will likely do so for the A19 and not the M5. This will start to alleviate this summer as Apple moves the iPhone Pro from the 3nm A19 to the 2nm A20, which will free up 3nm wafer capacity that can then be used to increase M5 family SoC production and allow the mini and Studio to be updated to M5.
And since reports say there will not be an M6 Pro or M6 Max, updating the Studio to M5 Max and M5 Ultra will have the model on the latest versions of those chips.

If you’re hunting the Apple Refurb site to land a Studio, I wouldn’t bother.
I tried RefurbPing for a few weeks, and while I did get the expected notifications, even immediately going to purchase - the item was already/always sold out.
I had to make my own bot via Distillio, and even that was a bit tricky.
I got about 60 notifications from the refurb drop yesterday afternoon, but I was only quick enough to have to opportunity to purchase one - a M4 Max 1TB/128GB.
I think there must be bots that also automatically make the purchase, as well.
TL;DR - if you’re looking for the higher memory configs (i.e. any spec not currently listed on Apple.com) you’re probably screwed. Lucky timing and fast clicking won’t be enough.

Last night around 10pm CST, more Mac Studios hit the US Apple refurb store. Probably 10 different configurations, mostly M4 Max with 36GB, but at least a few M3 Ultra 96GB 1TB. And there was a single M3 Ultra 256GB 4TB model that I could add to cart, but price was $10K and that felt like a crazy impulse purchase, for me at least.
I’m not exaggerating when I say all these listings last <5 seconds.

I'm in the same boat, I need to replace my M1 Max Mac Studio. I'm going to hold out until we know what's happening with a new model, though I'm not sure how I'll feel if it takes a year for them to actually become available.

Yes, selling privately will get me almost triple what Apple quoted for a trade in ($440).
I am looking at the current M4 Studio using EDU pricing but I can't find the 24 month lease option....
I had been looking to replace my base model Studio M1 Max ever since the M5 family was announced early this year.
However, in the spring it became apparent to me. We may not even get an M5 Max/Ultra Studio for the foreseeable future, and any model with 128GB of memory could start at $7K USD.
With that in mind, I was fortunate enough to get a refurbished M4 Max 128GB directly from Apple and also (very fortunate) to get a new M3 Ultra 256GB 2TB new at Microcenter.
I need to decide which one I'm going to keep. So far the M3 Ultra with 256GB is a true beast for local AI models.
Even if an M5 Max comes out in 2026, I doubt it will support 256GB. I'm sure it will be faster at some things, but M3 Ultra 256/512GB is going to be hard to beat, for a long time, maybe even 2+ years.
