MR says "the M3 Max shows an approximately 18% increase in single-core performance compared to the ‌M2‌ Max. In multi-core performance, the improvement is even more pronounced, with the M3 Max scoring about 38% higher than the ‌M2‌ Max" and "M3 Max shows an increase of approximately 14% in GPU benchmarks" "a compelling upgrade."

Personally I primarily look at GPU and single core, and I do not call 14% & 18% a significant leap, I call it normal good evolution. IMO the bigger observation is that Max chips own the issue of performance; Pro and Basic chips are weaker regardless of generation.

Really? Here are some screenshots from Geekbench of the M2 Ultra Mac Studio (not the Max) and the 16" M3 Max MacBook Pro.

The 16" M3 Max MacBook Pro beats the M2 Ultra Mac Studio in Single core easily while being able to match the M2 Ultra in multi core performance.

Calling the M3 Max not a significant leap in performance over the M2 Max is joke, when the M3 Max is basically beating the M2 Ultra.

Really, stop spreading BS information. The 16" M3 Max MacBook Pro destroys the M2 Max Mac Studio, it is not even close.

@OP

Here is a screenshot of the M2 Max Mac Studio which @Allen_Wentz calls "not significantly" slower than the 16" M3 Max MacBook Pro. Clearly a huge difference in performance in favour of the 16" M3 Max MacBook Pro.

1) Ultra chip performance is a special case and not something that I have commented on, nor do I intend to.

2) The numbers I quoted (hence the italics and quotation marks) are simply what MR published. No doubt other entities have more accurate benchmarking. However they are just benchmarks, used in a limited way as an adjunct to decision making. So smallish inaccuracies from MR or whomever are IMO generally moot.

3) What I said was: "Personally I primarily look at GPU and single core, and I do not call 14% & 18% a significant leap, I call it normal good evolution."
Is that what you call BS? I did also quote MR's 38% multicore increase.

4) I will real-world be in the thick of that analysis after M3 Studios are released, i.e. should I replace my M2 MBP Max desktop setup with an M3 Studio or with an M2 Studio? If I ignore 3D it will come down to real-world price/performance comparisons, not to M2 Max benchmark versus M3 Max benchmark comparisons as [IMO silly] benchmark afficionados seem to like focusing on.

Decision-making today, [if I ignore 3D] based on extrapolating MBP M3 Max to [likely] M3 Studio, my expectation is that I would use the M3 pricing premium and put the extra $$ into an M2 Studio with maximum RAM. Folks like me who actually buy Max chip boxes IMO will long term [if we ignore 3D] real world see more benefit from $800 more RAM than from M3 versus M2.

Apple is of course very likely to throw further hiccups into the analysis with M3 Studio. They always do.

No BS, just my experienced opinion.

Options:

"If" you have the money:

Wait for the M3 for MacBook Air and Mac Studio if you want a desktop and lighter portability option.

If you "don't" have the money:

KEEP: your 2019 MacBook Pro and use it as your portable until it does not handle your workload any longer. It still can load macOS Sonoma and probably one more macOS and should work seamless with a Mac Studio. All you have to deal with is the fans going on on the Intel MacBook Pro or getting a little warm in usage, but if that does not bother you, then keep it.

If you just want an "all-in-one" Mac:

M3 MacBook Pro = Best of both worlds (laptop & Desktop).

It all depends on preference really now-a-days. M3 MacBook Pro is powerful and will do the job. The next M3 Mac Studio will be a beast.

My eyes water and my wallet (and wife) will need convincing when it the next Mac Studio comes out.

The thing is, the M2 Studio is so strong (I know because I am using the similar M2 Max MBP now, bought when M2 Studios were delayed), I will be curious to see what M3 Studio consists of that might justify M3 over loaded M2. Apple may have some surprises for us.

What I am really interested in is where Apple goes with M3 Mac Pro. Not because I would ever need one personally, but because I find Apple's directions around chip architecture and products very interesting.

I would think that logically Apple would put out a M-“something” ultra and only have it for the Mac Pro..but who knows. Apple’s direction on technology is anyone’s guess right now.
