After several friends had raved about their new Macs (iBook and iMac respectively) when I started having problems with my WIN XP machine and was frustrated with the darned virus scan and firewall programs which hinder performance even as they are supposedly protecting the user's computer, I ventured into the Apple store...
First impression: wow, these are beautiful machines to look at! I looked at the desktop wallpaper and wondered, "where are all the icons? How do you DO anything? What's that little bar of icons down there? Is that like the WIN launch tray?" I didn't get much opportunity to play around with the machines and the OS because of an eager and attentive Apple salesperson. I like to have time to mess with things on my own.... I left the store impressed by the hardware but a little dubious about the software and OS. A couple days later I went back in for another look. I was getting more interested, but stil had no chance to just "look under the hood" by myself. Another day I was at Microcenter to pick up printer paper and decided to look at the new PCs on offer. Bleh. After a few minutes I found myself drifting into the section reserved for the Macs. Ah....at last, an opportunity to play with the Mac and Tiger to my heart's content! No hovering salesperson!
I also had started reading Macrumors and other Mac-related sites and so was right on top of things when they made the announcement about the new iMac. That did it. I knew the time had come.... I hustled into my local Apple store the very next evening and got me a Rev B iMac (I preferred it to the new one for several reasons), brought it home and opened the box, marvelling at the great packaging.
Plugged in my new iMac and thought, "OK, now this will take a while, getting it set up...." and was astonished when I found myself on the internet only a few minutes later! No fuss, no muss, no danged virus scan protection programs or firewall programs to worry about!
Heh.... I fell in love with my new iMac that very first night. The simple, elegant beauty of the machine and the simple, elegant beauty of the operating system totally amazes me. As they say, "Everything just WORKS!!!" The transition for me was very painless and although I had bought a couple of books, found that I really did not need to refer to them at all because everything is so intuitive in a Mac. After coming from around 18 years or so of using computers with DOS and then Windows, I was dumbfounded at how smoothly everything functions on a Mac. No hassles. It's so EASY! It WORKS!
I loved my iMac so much that after Steve Jobs' next big announcement, I ordered myself a BTO 15" PB so that I can have my Mac wherever I go...
The old desktop PC and my old laptop will be collecting dust because I sure as heck don't want to return to Windows now. I have seen the Mac Way of Life and it is GOOD.
Others have made note of the key points that make a Mac so much better, and i concur wholeheartedly. I also agree that someone needs to have the opportunity to not only see a Mac in action, but to have a little hands-on experience with it, too. For me that is what made a difference, the hour or so I had to just play around with it myself that one day in the store rather than having a salesperson babbling at me and showing me everything so fast that I really didn't get a chance to appreciate it.
I haven't yet discovered all the neat things I can do with my Macs, but, boy, I am sure enjoying the experience of using them!
