I found something which I thought would fx it, but it didn't. There were two apps that hadn't fully downloaded and I installed from 2015!! That's a problem. So I installed them. iMovie and something else. They were partially installed. So why would that be? But it didn't changed. Still got hung after shut down command.

Update is optimistic.

I think I've figured it out but I've thought this before.

Is it possible . . . ?

I have two MPs. I switched OS drives. MP 2 hard drive inside MP 1 shutdown and restarted perfectly.

Hard drive 1 ( the problem one I suspect) inside MP 2 did a few strange things. At first the screen was wrong in terms of the settings. But it restarted right away. BUT it didn't boot right. Twice instead of the splash screen it had a flashing globe. WTF IS THAT?? I've seen the question mark but never the globe. I guess it means can't find the system. I shutdown restarted and globe again. But the next time I reset the PRAM - it's been working fine.

So I probably switched the hard drives at some point. Would this have created a problem like this? Can the OS drive be still looking for a specific machine and not be happy?

I had decided the 2.8 Quad should be the main Mac. But now they're both 3.46 quad so I think I'll go back. The UAD cards came up. For now it seems happy.

I've swapped drives between different Macs many times without any ill effects. I've even swapped drives between different Mac models and it worked fine.

So have I. This was the first time it was weird. I have many, many, many drives I've substituted. This was the last thing I thought of or tried. Unless it all goes south again. But I spent all afternoon trying to make this fail and it didn't.

I don't think so. Maybe. Remember the MP works perfectly. It just wouldn't restart and one PCIe wouldn't work out of four. I think if a pin were out there'd be bigger problems than that don't you think? And it's been acting this way for at least 6 months or more.

Well sure. But when troubleshooting I try to isolate where the problem is coming from. And it wasn't JUST the PCIe card. This company makes a FireWire version of the card. In their frustration they just gave me one of those too. That also didn't work half the time.

I've been trying to figure this thing out for the better part of a year. Bent pin? Possible but I doubt it. I've taken the drive bay in and out and in and out. Only when I put it in the original machine did it suddenly behave right. I'd say there was something else going on.

CPU socket. I just replaced the CPU. The problem was occurring long before that, unless you're referring to something else.

Just to report after a month and a half. The problem has not recurred. As strange as it seems to have been going back to the swapped drives. Don't know why but I haven't had a problem restarting, shutting down or getting both the UAD devices to work since I did.

Okay, didn't I read where a new account was created and there are no problems with that account meaning it can restart just fine?

If so, then it could be a bad plist file in your user/library folder Or wherever your plist files are stored.

My understanding is you don't have to reinstall applications. They are in the /Applications folder. Creating a new user account means you would lose preferences (aka plist) but you can reset those as needed.

Keep the old account around just in case you need to see what settings are for a given application.

Just a thought.
