Hey everyone,

I just wanted to share my experiences with my new MacBook Air 13" (2010) 1.86 GHz, 4GB memory, 128GB flash storage. I got my machine a week ago. Booted it up and installed all the Apple updates. I then synced all my MobileMe stuff, and installed Evernote, Chrome, TextMate and the Flash plug-in. Everything worked flawlessly for 5 days and then I had a kernel panic a couple of minutes after waking from sleep. I got the message that told me to hold the power button to force a restart.

After that I got consistent error messages and program crashes when waking from sleep or when quitting applications - iTunes, Mail.app, Flash plug-in, Evernote, and Safari all seemed affected. Even creating a new user account yielded the same results. Tried repairing permissions, resetting SMC, and PRAM but no change.

I reinstalled the OS last night and so far I haven't had any problems. Ran memory tests, CPU load test, and GPU load tests and nothing seems to force an error. So, I current thinking is that the originally installed OS had some installation issues from the factory or I have an elusive hardware issue.

If anyone has any experience or thoughts, I'd love to hear them. That said, I figured I'd share in case anyone else was having similar issues.

Thanks!

Here is the KP error report:

I had those issues once in a while when using older versions of Parallels. I think you're OK. My situation might be a bit more nebulous.

MacBook Air (2010) also with Application Crashes

I reinstalled the OS last night and so far I haven't had any problems. Ran memory tests, CPU load test, and GPU load tests and nothing seems to force an error. So, I current thinking is that the originally installed OS had some installation issues from the factory or I have an elusive hardware issue.

If anyone has any experience or thoughts, I'd love to hear them. That said, I figured I'd share in case anyone else was having similar issues.

[/CODE]

After waking up the brand new MacBook Air I experienced the same issues. No Kernel Panic but Application Crashes for a bunch of applications.

As an example:

Process: Safari [227]
Path: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari

Any suggestions what the cause could be and how to fix it ultimately. Is the re-installation the only fix?

It looks like to be a general issue of the MacBook Air...

Thanx for any advise!

I had several kernel panics before on my 13" ultimate. What worked for me was using the "Disk Utility" to Verify Disk Permissions and then repair the permissions. Give that a try.

OK, I think I'm starting to figure out what might be causing these kernel panics. I restarted my computer from Deep Sleep today and got the message that I had to restart. I read the panic report before sending it on to Apple and noticed that Parallels was one of the active applications both times. I have Parallels 6 installed, and Safari 5.0.3 was active. From the detailed reports, I'm guessing that somehow those two applications are involved. I restarted from deep sleep again, but this time without Safari active, and it seemed to be OK. I'll see if I notice a pattern.

It's odd, to say the least. I'm on my second MacBook Air (my first had the wake from sleep issue), but the kernel panics didn't start until Safari 5.0.3. I also had to reinstall Parallels 6 last week because it was giving me an odd error.

I like the MacBook Air, but these Rev A "bugs" are a bit annoying considering this is a Rev D device, and the components are nothing new (apart from the Toshiba SSD).

Thank you for the hint. But it didn't worked out. The verification listed a huge amount of wrong permissions and the repair activity corrected them. But as soon as I start one of the formerly affected applications it crashes again...

Any other suggestions? Or do I really have to reinstall my MacBook. I thought with changing from Win to Mac this would never be necessary :p

But seriously, how do I re-install a mac?

Thanks

Same problem

I had the same problem about one week ago. After the apple store reinstalled the OS version, the problem did'nt show up anymore until this morning. Again a kernel panic. an Apple advisor told me to uninstall Growl, because this programm seems to crawl deep in the system...

Oddly, I haven't had any in a week (knock on wood). I have used Parallels and obviously Safari since then, which were the two programs that showed up in the kernel panic reports. I'll chalk it up to a software issue for now.

For what it's worth,

I received my 11" MBA about 2 weeks ago. Worked perfectly for a week and all of a sudden started freezing and kernel panicking on me like crazy. And by crazy I mean:

* I shook the mouse from screen saver, and it froze.
* Force rebooted the computer, which gave me a blank grey screen with the folder and the ? mark.
* Rebooted again and brought me to a black screen and the fans start to spin up really loud.
* Called Applecare, and reset the PRAM / SMC a few times, all is normal.

5 hours of use later

* System kernel panicked.
* Rebooted, system kernel panics again about a minute after logging in.
* Reset SMC/PRAM, shut down computer completely, and rebooted. System kernel panics again.

Since I use this machine at work, I ran out to the nearest Apple Authorized Service Center (I live in Korea, so there are no actual Apple Stores here.. sigh).

I open my laptop there and it doesnt kernel panic anymore (figures.) They couldn't run the diagnostics on it because they weren't updated for the air yet, but I got the advice to take the machine home and run an extended looping hardware test overnight.

7 passes later, no error messages, nothing. So I figure it's the software and I reinstall, and have had no issues.... then 7 days later (today), I open my macbook and the backlight is dark. I can see the display, so I shut down the machine, pray, and turn it back on. It starts up dark but eventually lights up and I havent had a problem thus far... but I'm starting to get a little scared...

As for questions:

* Anyone know if there really is an issue with having growl installed? I've had it installed on my mac mini at home forever and never had any issues with kernel panics..

* So far the solution to my problems with booting have been resetting the SMC, as I'm told by the Applecare reps can become corrupt. I'm not running anything out of the ordinary (office 2011, safari, adium), what could be causing this? I haven't installed any new software since the day I reinstalled everything.

* Could clicktoflash be a source of kernel panics? That's the only thing I haven't reinstalled yet...

I have a replacement logic board on order, but apparently Korea's part's hub is in Singapore, so it'll be a week or two before it comes in... :(

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

This really bugs me. My first base 11.6 got a kernel panic after 2 days. Due to the loose hinge I returned it. I have had this one since Black friday and had 1 kernel panic Saturday. It said it was caused by safari. I am now using firefox. These kernal panics are the same as a blue screen in windows they just look prettier but you loose all your work and have to reboot. This is unacceptable for a MAC. I have had my imac 24 loaded with software for 2 years and never 1 kernal panic. I ran the extended hardware tests but like others have said it may not find all issues.

I still have about 9 days to return my 11.6 so 1 more kernal panic and its going back. I really like this little computer and the base model suits my needs fine but reliability is important. Not sure if its a memory issue or ssd issue but its sure not a heat issue as this thing runs very cool.

Problem solved!

Okay, just picked up my air and they say they know the problem. It seems that flashplayer, silverlight and cooliris won't work with the air, because it's simply not made for that.. so uninstall flashplayer and silverlight and kernel panics won't be an issue anymore... (i hope so)

Same problem with MBP 15" (mid-2010)

I don't have an Air, but have a MBP 15" (mid 2010). I am having the same problem with Office 2011 (Outlook crashes 12-20x per day) and with Filemaker. Anyone else with problems/solutions for this? Microsoft has been unable to help solve this problem.

I've had a new Mac mini for about a month and suffered maybe a dozen kernel panics all induced when waking from sleep (the computer, not me). Doing my head in as my previous Mac mini which I had for 5 years never suffered from this. Done all the usual stuff to try and fix but no luck. Logs suggest a different cause each time so no real help. Thinking of returning it to Amazon UK as 'not fit for purpose'.

Just got a kernel panic waking from sleep. Have a 11.6" ultimate, got on Christmas Day and been on ever since. All I have installed on it is xcode & iPhone SDK, flashplayer ( installed many days ago ) and Autodesk sketchbook pro. All software is up to date.

Last thing I did on it was plug in my Touch and check email. Then email again a few hours later. Then about an hour later went to check email again and black screen and wouldn't wake, had to power cycle.

The panic log seems to suggest an NVidia issue...uh oh. Still waiting to have similar problems with my two year old Asus EEE 901 or my 4 year old Macbook... :)

I assume you all updated to 10.6.5 and then installed the EFI 2.0 update?

Userland software will not cause kernel panics in the OS. Kernel panics are generally caused by hardware driver issues, which may or may not be manifested by some piece of software running on the box. Or through lower layer OS functions like scheduling, etc.

Someone can tell you to not run such and such software at the same time but it's highly unlikely that's causing the issue.

My guess is Apple may have some driver updating to do to fix the issues, at least on the MBA.

I found with my RevC MBA that if you sleep with a USB device attached, then unplug while sleeping, then wake, you get a KP. Perhaps that's what happened in your case.

Possible, but I unplugged the Touch after I couldn't wake the computer from sleep. In the kernel log is this:

Backtrace continues...
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

Which leads me to believe that it is an nvidia driver issue...but this could be the result of something else.

I can deal with Safari or an App crashing most of the time, yeah, it's frustrating to lose work, but at least you know your machine ( HW and SW drivers ) isn't "bad".

This worries me, because I've not had an Apple computer kernel panic.

Now that I've used it a few more days, I've had Safari crash more times in these few days on the Air than I had in 4 years of use of my original Dual Core Macbook...

I used to think Apple machines were superior quality, but this experience is making me realize that is no longer true.

Did you install software with kernel extensions? If so, you should try to uninstall them and see if it resolves the issues.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not frustrated enough to try to debug this myself - do enough of that at work and don't want to mess with it at home too. :)

All I have installed is Xcode and the iPhone SDK, Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and Flashplayer...The exact same things installed on my four year old Macbook that has never had a kernel panic.

I'm just hoping Apple acknowledges the issue(s) and fixes them with a SW update, as otherwise this is an awesome machine. Plenty of power, good battery life ( 3-5 hours depending on what I am doing ), great size and weight...etc.

If you have time and want to isolate the issue, I only see 1 real solution.

Do a clean OS install and start adding back those programs one by one, using the machine for a day in between to see if you can get the panics to re-occur. In order, I would probably reinstall Flash, iPhone, Xcode and Autodesk. My gut says the panic comes with either Xcode or Autodesk.
