Apple said I could try and get someone to do data recovery,
Did you lose alot of files?

My bicycle broke and needed a $2600 replacement this week.
After putting $800 into that last May.
Things dont last that long anymore!

I hope this bike story made perspective on things!

Yes, I have several external drives that I used for time machine backups on my other macs. I plan to back up my new one now, never thought I would need to do it really because I had only internet files, but there were some files I would like to have had available and some photos. Lesson learned!

As an aside. In the EU you are protected against expensive things breaking within five years through standard consumer law. Apple would be legally liable for the laptop being in good working order, bar any other damage, up until this point.

Do you not have a similar law on that side of the Atlantic Ocean?

Even when the motherboard is the issue, in most cases ot can be repaired by replacing defective passive components such as capacitors or certain transistors. If Apple Store don’t power it up immediately, try to fix the board before replacing it.

Hello,

My 2020 Macbook Air just died. I can't get it to turn on after trying command, option, P and R, power button, then control, option, shift, power button, and just holding the power button down for 20 seconds several times. I think it could be the motherboard.

Other than taking it to a shop to get looked at, is there a way, other than an enclosure method (which I've done a few times on other computers) to get the hard drive data?

I've been wanted to get a new(er) Macbook Air 15 in. anyway, what is a good year to purchase?

Thank you all!!
Lynne
First off, sorry you are in this sucky situation.

2) You have a solid state drive [SSD], not a hard disk drive [HDD]. Even though hard drive often gets treated as a generic term for mass storage, the difference often does matter so you may want to try to use the accurate nomenclature.

3) IMO the Apple Store is always step one. Do not initially futz with the device yourself. Have the Apple Store look at it and tell you what the issue(s) may be. Also ask them if perhaps there was some kind of cloud backup going on that you might be unaware of.

4) Unless you do something like gaming, 3D, Blender, etc. that takes advantage of hardware ray tracing and the like (most of us do not), an older generation M2 or M3 series box with more than base RAM installed may be a good value. Especially if you were to get the higher end Macbook Pro rather than the low end Macbook Air.

Refurbished M4 Macbook Pros also are now off-and-on available (keep checking), and can be good value. IMO refurbs are often better than new, because they have been vetted by human techs rather than just some robot in Asia. The RAM amount is more relevant than M3 versus M2 or M4, because all the M-series chips are so strong.

Good luck!

This was a refurbished Macbook that I bought from Apple site 3 years ago.

HAPPY UPDATE!

I took my Macbook to a store in my area called Rotten Apples today. They are certified Apple product repair specialists. I can't say enough good things about them, wish they had more stores for people, but this is the only one.

Anyway, I took it at 10 am this morning and picked it up at 4 pm this afternoon. I was hoping to just be able to get some data recovery, but they fixed it! It was a audio panel component that was bad and they replaced it. Who knew?

Cost was $299 plus tax, totally worth it for me. The Apple store just wanted to replace the logic board for $450 and I would have lost all my data. Now, I have an extra computer, which is great!

Thanks again everyone for your help and comments!!

Woohoo! Happy for you. Took mine in to Apple today, they confirmed it isn’t receiving power. They’re going to replace the I/O board ($15 for the part, $100 for labor) and see if that fixes it. We’ll see!
