It's common for higher-capacity SSDs to be faster than their lower-capacity counterparts for reasons of certain efficiencies or something like that. Not sure if that applies here.

I downloaded the trial of Affinity photo and it openend after the installation within seconds.
I quit the app, opened it and it was there within a second.
I can fly around ICC at 1440x900 at settings 7 with a stable 60 FPS.
I can also play it at native resolution at settings 4,5 (so 4 with some tweaking).
I prefer the first one. The screen is small so it is perfectly playable (and I am a picky one on this).

App-Start until splash screen takes about 1,5 secs. Tested several times with all three Affinity apps (Photo, Designer, Publisher).
I also have an MBA M1 8C/8GB/512Gb like the thread creator.
My affinity apps are bought versions from the Serifs homepage (not from the App Store).

Can you please run black magic ssd test and check if there is coil whine on the keyboard?
I already did test that, check page 1 of this forum post. There is no coil whine.
my base MBA has had this a few times as well. I wouldn't have even noticed if I wasn't checking all the time to see memory pressure. No discernible performance drop , then it settled down again. Probably some background process.
Is anyone having issues with Apple Pay on the M1 MBA?
I've tried it on two different websites (Apple.com.au and Bellroy) and they've both refused the Apple Pay payment, saying "payment not processed" after Touch ID verified my fingerprint.
Have removed the card and added it back in and still refused.

Yes! I’ve been having this exact problem. I even contacted my card issuer and they said everything is ok their end, and that they are not seeing the transaction as declined or attempted to be put through. In the end, I had to get my son to buy on his card, and it went through immediately, so it wasn’t the website either.
I’ve been using Apple Pay for years with no problems, and the same cards are working on my phone just fine.

When you say you got your son to buy on his card, was it through Apple Pay? Or just normal credit card payment?
It was on is computer using his own stuff. Not via my M1 or Apple Pay.
Currently waiting on shipping to hurry the hell up and give me my MBA (I'm too impatient for this two week wait life XD). Ordered the exact same setup as OP. This thread has me even more excited to get it!
