I bought my mum an old MacBook Air A1465 for £100... It worked great, allowed her to open it up and surf the web, no issues, she does not need anything more.
Recently she opened it up and it was just a grey screen... Nothing else...
I opened it up and pressed CMD R and held it, had to hold it for a good 2 or 3 minutes and then the grey spinning globe and choose network..
But I can't get past the add network... I need to double check guy I rent house from has not changed the password, but is there an issue where it won't let me get past this add network???
She did not have much on there in the way of files, but did have a few things.. Can we forget about salvaging that now? Or is there a way to keep using this set up and hard drive and OS???
I know it's an old laptop but she does not need anything more.
Thanks.

Provide some hardware/software specifics and specs, you might get some targeted suggestions. Until then, go hard wired w/ Ethernet adapter. Internet Recovery over WiFi is super flakey.

Hi.. I don't know the specs now, as I can't get in to find them... No hard cable, only wifi..

Press the power on button and KEEP HOLDING IT DOWN until the screen goes black.

Connect a charger.

Now press AND HOLD these keys
Command-Option-R
... and press and release the power on button.

KEEP HOLDING THOSE KEYS DOWN. DON'T LET GO.

What happens next?

Do you get to a screen that asks for your wifi password?

If so, release the keys and enter it.

You should see a spinning globe, and eventually see the internet utilities pane.

Can you get there?

So just done your first step... pressed the power button, did not press it back up, just kept holding it and after 20 seconds the flashing box with ? in it... And in text below it says 'support.apple.com/mac/startup...

So that's not right is it?

I can get to the section where you choose wifi, I mentioned this.. But I just held CMD and R and then I can choose a wifi network but the issue I am having is it will not accept the wifi password... I have tried it 10 times...

"So that's not right is it?"

No, it's not.
Go back and do it exactly as how I said to do it.

"I can get to the section where you choose wifi, I mentioned this.. But I just held CMD and R and then I can choose a wifi network but the issue I am having is it will not accept the wifi password"

Again, go back and do what I asked you to.
DO NOT use "command-R"

Command-option-R.

Option+Shift+Command+R is Internet Recovery. This where wired connection preferred as WiFi is flakey.
Thanks..
When you say flakey, you mean flakey as in what I am experiencing now? As in it just won't accept the correct password?? I have tried it on 2 wifi and same issue... just won't accept it.

Possibly. Try reset NVRAM. Shutdown. Hold Command+Option+P+R for about 30 seconds while restarting. You’ll probably get the “?” again. Restart and try the Option+Shift+Command+R again. Hopefully WiFi password will work. If not, you’ll need to use wired Ethernet.

I suspect your internal storage has gone kaput.

You can find out the exact specs with the EMC number, which I think is printed in small letters on the bottom of the laptop. Enter it at EveryMac.com

From the model number you give, it is an 11 inch MacBook Air but could be from any year from mid-2012 to early 2015.

If that's the case, he should be able to boot to INTERNET recovery (using "command-option-R").

Why internet recovery?
Because doing that "bypasses" the internal drive, which may be having problems.

If you boot only to "command-R", I believe that is trying to boot from the recovery partition ON the internal drive -- and again, if the internal drive isn't working right, that may not work.

I'm thinking that if the owner can't get onto his wifi network, using a USB-to-ethernet adapter MIGHT work. But I'm not certain about that, never have been in that situation.
