Personally, I think the Air will be perfect for the uses that you mentioned, as soon as it gets a bump in RAM. I don't think that the current 2gb ceiling will age well for the time period you plan on using the machine, especially with the way mobile technology is advancing and how we are changing our expectations of what an ultra-portable should be capable of.

One question that the OP asked that I don't think anyone answered, was issues with the newer models similar to what was seen in the Rev A. I can't speak for anyone else, but my Rev B. has performed flawlessly thus far, and I haven't experienced any of the common problems reported for the MBA like screen hinge defects, etc.

Most Rev B MBA owners who post here seem pleased with them. I would have bought an MBA for myself by now were it not for its having only 2Gb of RAM. I continue to hope that Apple will announce a significantly improved Rev C MBA at WWDC but I have become pessimistic about it happening, although I hope I'm wrong. Anyway, my tea leaves and crystal ball are no better at foretelling the future, particularly Apple's future, than anybody else's.:)

My little iPad continues to do yeoman work but its many limitations continue to frustrate me. The good news on that score, though, is that a 16 Gb iPad sells for $499, which is $1,300 less than the SSD equipped MBA costs. That difference allowed me to buy a 64Gb iPad for my grandson as a combined high school graduation and birthday gift and still have money left over.
