well you know, my logic was, if you're gonna get one at some point anyway, waiting to buy one or waiting for a replacement unit shouldn't make a big difference, right? it's not like they're going to get updated next tuesday ;)

for now, let's all keep my fingers crossed for mine, it should be here on monday!
god knows i'll be waiting outside in the ontario cold for the fedex guy. 3 months without a mac are physically painful!

do not want to start a new thread.. but i really want to get some opinion. Should i get my AIR this weekend? or should I still wait till APPLE settle all the bugs?? I have been waiting to buy AIR since day 1.. starting was because there is no stock.. now is because of the bug.. how?

I know the feeling. But if you are always waiting on the better/faster version, you will be waiting forever. I gave it a month before I bought mine, and no regrets. The value of having it now far outweigh the small risk of problems with the machine.

Of course you have a MacBook Air, I didn't want to imply you are a liar! :)

Ok so, wow, I just got mine on tuesday, been working with it a helluva lot. Now, yesterday, out of the blue it got realllly hot, the fan started blowing at full speed and the 2nd core shut down and it kept lagging for minutes on end. I had to manually power it off (as in hold down the power button until it died).

I was installing xcode from a .dmg and writing an email in my parallels (ubuntu). It seems to me as if I had taxed the system much more in the past.

When it started making the noise, I just put it on the bed for 1 minute, after the fan started acting up, i put it next to my window, and as you can see by my user profile, I am in canada, so next to my window it's about 0 degrees.

Was that just some oddity or do I have to expect similar episodes like this in the future?
as in: replacement y/n?

If it started acting nuts after you put it on the bed you almost certainly blocked the vents with the bedclothes. Your machine may be OK, since that sounds like expected behavior.

Saw it for the first time here in South Africa yesterday (we're behind the rest of the world). The machine is very cool, I like it although I think multi-touch is WAAAAY overrated. Thanks for listening ;)

Thanks JCT, if it keeps doing it, I will just have to get it fixed. I am never letting go of this machine EVER AGAIN. Love it to death.

I agree, Multi-Touch is cool but nowhere near essential. I hope there'll be more to it at some point though.

when I went to the apple store here, I was amazed. The keyboard is great and the whole thing is well...simply beautiful. I do have to agree though the mulitcouh is overrated. I heard of some people buying the new MBP cause it now has multitouch. I wish I had enough money to be an air but I'll be waiting until revision 2.

Loved gestures

I do have to agree though the mulitcouh is overrated. I heard of some people buying the new MBP cause it now has multitouch.

I had the MBA for a few weeks (returned it due to fan issues) as a Windows convert. I know that some of the touchpad gestures like two finger scroll and tap may not be officially the new multitouch gestures but I loved them. Now that I'm temporarily back to windows I still find myself two finger scrolling on web pages (alas to no avail).

I hope they get the heat issues worked out soon on the MBA or I will be "forced" to get a MBP.

Hello,

Just wanted to chime in with all the happy MacBook Air owners out there!
I've had mine for just over three weeks now, and couldn't be happier with it.

Using it as a companion piece to my iMac and it does everything that I expect it to.

I guess all those with issues regarding the size of the HD and the number of ports really just got it for all the wrong reasons.

In fact, I've only ever opened the ports' door on the machine one time - that was just to test that all the ports were functioning. And that was on the day I bought the machine. Since then, I've been transferring files to and from the Air to the iMac via wireless file transfer.

Even purchased the external superdrive, which, again, I have only ever used once - also to test it.

It's speedy enough - faster than my three year old iMac G5 - I think. And the HD capacity is more than enough if you consider that it is meant to complement my desktop unit, and not replace it.

Fans have been silent (you should hear the G5!). And no overheating issues at all.

Great machine and definitely something to consider if you have the right use for it.

Cheers!

After two weeks with my MBA I would agree with everything you said. It did take me four days of use to discover that the MBA indeed has a fan, so I guess you could say I have no issues with it. Using Parallels seems to be what kicks mine on.

The only problems have been the gestures. I guess I have a "lazy" finger that sometimes drags with unexpected results. Getting better with practice.

I got my mba past week, and love it.. However, I do find the keyboard a bit stiff, and the tiny track bar below the track pad to be tiny. Other than that, everything is exceptional.

I am soooo happy with mine. With coolbook, it's perfect and silent, and runs warblade (game) really nicely. It's the first 'notebook' computer, it's like carrying a clipboard when it's shut!

I poo-poo'ed it at launch, and scoffed on it's inefficient form-over-function design, and then i used one, and reluctantly had to admit that i'd been wrong; this machine is the future, it's the Rev A of the computer we'll all be using in a few years. Think Rev A iMac vs current one, Rev A iPod vs iPhone/iPod touch.

I LOVE the keyboard now i'm used to it. I don't bump the touchpad.

As for the button? I've learnt to use ALL the gestures; doubletap and hold to drag, tap again to release etc. get familiar with these well before you deicde not to use them. I'd happily have no button at all now.

I am still madly in love with mine. Yesterday I took it with me to a friend's, as we were doing some computer-related activities, and then since I was going right from there to a gathering/dinner party at a restaurant, of course I took it in there with me, too, rather than leaving it in the car. During dinner the conversation turned to technology and computers. I wowed the table when I pulled out my MBA and showed it off -- "ooh, is that the new ThinBook?" People hefted it and were amazed. They oohed and ahhed at its sleek profile and beauty. I tucked it back into its bag as dinner was being served. A while later the conversation turned to discussion of a particular store in another area, and someone mentioned its website. I promptly pulled out my iPhone from my pocket, typed in the URL and everyone was amazed to see that very website right before their eyes! They decided I was the Technology Queen of the night!

Normally I wouldn't take my laptop to a dinner party but because of my schedule that day I had to do so -- and the Air sure made it a lot easier weight-wise than it would've been if I'd had my MBP with me! Also had another bag with my DSLR, as I was taking photos during the event last night as well.

In a few weeks I'll be taking my Air on her first flight -- it certainly will be easier traveling with it than with a larger, heavier MBP!

I LOVELOVELOVELOVE my MBA!

Just got my MBA. I love it. Not too hot nor noisy for me. Watching flash videos make fans speed up, but thats just normal.

I don't think I'm gonna undervolt or do any other tricks to my MBA. Nice machine and the coolest laptop I've ever had.

(I have now had this MBA for almost 2 hours :) )

Glad you like it! I love mine. :)

I would suggest undervolting if you find the fans annoying. Mine would only core shutdown under extreme stress, but the fans often spun up. With it undervolted, it's 100% stable, and silent with videos and you tube, only gets loud with more agressive stuff.

Anyone here have the SSD drive that can say how much of the hard drive was left when you booted it up for the first time?:D

I'm delighted with my 64Gb SSD Air. I spent a lot of time agonising over whether or not I could manage with 64Gb and decided I could.

First of all, the space on the disk is 55.8 Gb and, out of the box, there is about 37Gb left.

The first thing I'd recommend is an erase and restore of the operating system. During this procedure you can delete unwanted language translations and accept only the printer drivers you need. I also deleted Garage Band for what that's worth. After this operation I had increased the basic space to 44Gb. I've seen reports that others have improved slightly on that.

I also took forum advice and bought Xslimmer which cuts down the size of applications by stripping out superflous translations and code that isn't necessary for your particular configuration. I managed to save a further 2Gb. After adding all my apps (including iWork instead of MS Office) I'm left with 34Gb.

So far all is fine. I'm using an external disk for iPhoto libraries, but I decided to add my 7Gb iTunes library to the internal drive.

The 64Gb drive is acceptable and workable. Of course I'd prefer 250Gb (!) but you have to remember this is an ultra portable. I carry it around as I would never have carried the MacBook. It's simply magical.
