Yes, if you're planning to buy a 13" MBA, you will get $100 off, plus a $200 rebate on an ipod touch. So the refurbished MBA is $200 cheaper than full price, but the Back To School sale gets you $300. Maybe you don't need an iPod touch right now, but you can easily sell it on craigslist or ebay and end up with $300 off of your computer.

13" ruins the point of a MBA. I'd go with 11.6" and max out the RAM if you have enough money. If you can splurge even more, max out the CPU too.

How do you figure? I have a 1st Gen MBA and it was designed as the thinnest notebook, not a netbook. I think the 11 inch screen is a nice choice if you are looking for a netbook but for constant productivity a 13" screen is going to be easier on the eyes.

Plus the 13" MBA has a solid state drive and a higher resolution over a 13" macbook pro. I've seen a lot of people comment that the 13" MBA is pointless, and it just doesn't make any sense to me. An ultimate 11' MBA is the same price as the 13" MBA with upgraded RAM, but the 13" has a bigger screen, a faster processor and longer battery life. The 11" looks cheaper, but it's actually more expensive for what you're getting.

For me the screen size is not a big deal to me. I have had a netbook to an 18" laptop, both great and did what i needed at the time. The netbook ended up breaking which lead me to buy the 18" laptop. but now the laptop is too uncomfortable to take to school so i wanted a decently powered laptop that was very small and easy to carry around. The problem with getting another netbook was i am afraid that will will break just like my pervious one.

The student discount and the 99 dollar rebate on a printer is year round as far as I know, but the free ipod touch promo is only during the summer. I saw that in Japan this promo is already going on and with it I read a rough translation somewhere that the 11 inch Air and Mac mini weren't included. That doesn't mean that will translate to the US promotion, but I wouldn't hold my breath haha.

Also the iPod touch promo only works with a new purchase at student pricing. It wont work if your a student buying a refurb.

(I guess you can tell I've looked into this)

13" was the orginal air and is still perfect and flawless and half the people actually like it more than the 11.6, no disrespect but you are wrong. :D :apple:

Not to mention that the 13" MBA has the SD Card slot, which for some is very important.

I think the 13" is great with the increased resolution.
4GB of RAM is a must.

1. Wait for the back to school special, free iPod Touch.
2. Then you should wait for the Lion release, might as well have the latest software.
3. The MBA will probably be updated soon after that, so wait for the Sandybridge update. Buy the new one, or discounted old one.

I guess it depends on what your personal preferences are. I'm much more likely to store documents in the cloud or on a USB stick. My university and work computers all have USB ports, but none of them have SD ports. Plus, my only camera is my iPhone, so no SD card there. The only items that I own that have SD slots and no USB are Wii and DSi, and I can't even think of any reason why I would want to move anything from them to my computer.

Granted, a lot of people do use SD cards, so for them it's one less adapter to carry around. I just don't see myself using it much.

I'm planning to wait for the back to school sale, but I already started summer classes and I'm debating whether I should just get a refurbished one right now.

Even if I'm able to sell the iPod for full price, the refurbished model would only be about $50 cheaper. Having to wait two weeks, having to pay more upfront, having to wait for the iPod rebate and having to sell the iPod to someone all sounds like a lot of extra work.

if you don't need a computer until the fall, there are plenty of good reasons to wait.

Sound advice, the 11.6 works well for what it's trying to achieve.

For the same price you can get a 13" with:

-a faster processor
-faster system bus speed
-bigger L2 cache
-a bigger battery
-a bigger and higher resolution screen
-an SD card slot.

It would even be just as thin. The only difference is a slightly bigger footprint and a ~0.5 lb weight increase. The 11" is still a really nice machine, but keep in mind how much you're trading off for a slightly smaller form.

Ok, so by next week sometime I should be able to buy a Macbook air for school so I just want all the macbook air users to weight in here. Should I buy the 11.6 or 13.3 Inch macbook air, what are the reasons that you love this machine and how much memory is enough? :apple:

It's way to personal to help you decide on a size, 11" or 13" only you know what will work for you. They are nearly identical in every other way, just check the specs on the Apple.com site.

Get 4GB of ram, you will not regret it. Especially as the OS keeps being updated. Your apps get bigger, there's no such thing as too much memory when it's just 4GB. Especially since it's fixed, and no cannot upgrade it. Whatever you choose you at the time you order it, you are stuck with.

This is an interesting thread in a few areas. I've been thinking of getting an updated 13" Air whenever they come out for school in the fall. Hopefully the education discount isn't over before Lion comes out but it wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to get the MBA before Lion was released.

For tasks that require more processing power I also thought that I would get the new 27" iMac that came out. Maybe have my mom order that since she is faculty on a college campus and would also qualify for the discount with her campus ID.

Things to think about...

Get the 13 Inch

Specifically, get the 13 inch 256GB 4GB and (optionally) 2.13ghz. Those specs will be great if ur in the IT subject.
